I refer to the news report Zam: Business folk shouldn't be involved in the media . It is commendable for Zainuddin Maidin to utter his enlightenment regarding the involvement of businessmen in journalism.

However, I strongly feel that this is inevitable because of the nature of media in Malaysia being a business entity. There is still no media outlet in Malaysia established with public trust funds like Britain's BBC and The Guardian .

The reality is that, more often than not, the threat to journalism in Malaysia is from the political community rather than the business community. This is because the political community has more influence compared to the business community.

If Zainuddin would complain about the influence of business community on journalism, he should also have the courage to point out the influence of the political community over journalism too.

He should know better as he start off with Utusan Malaysia , the first newspaper in Malaysia to be privileged with Umno intervention. With regards to his observation about the business community, it is only fitting for such a statement to come from a politician for as the Malay saying goes, 'Kuman di seberang laut nampak, gajah di depan mata tidak nampak'.
