I wish to respond to Terminator's Police 'tudung': Stop the fuss . The writer talks about uniformity, saying that in a parade, the odd one out will be the non-Malay who insists on not wearing the tudung .
If the tudung directive is for purpose of official attire during parades and march passes, then let the Malay women do it; why force the non-Malay women into it? Many of the non-Malay policewomen who were interviewed on the matter (their opinions splashed across the newspapers the next day) are very young and inexperienced girls.
These are young girls very enthusiastic about being given the chance to participate in a parade. Why question these young, gullible girls who will say anything to please their superiors?
Today it will be a matter of uniformity and tomorrow it will be a compulsory directive. The people are not dumb and with this directive we might have to brace ourselves for more Moorthy cases in the future. The next target will be the National Service trainees and then the nurses and the list will go on and on in the name of uniformity.
I am sure that the Terminator knows that the IGP had stated that the directive is to show that good values in Islam are being enforced in the police force. So again it is not a matter of uniformity and it is a big issue for the non-Malays.
Comparing the situation with that of in the Arab world is very inappropriate as we are South East Asians and not Arabs; we don't need to ape them. Yes, our women do go there for better pay but are they happy wearing the hijab ? We know that they are being forced into donning it. So it is not on their own free will.
