The decision not to go ahead with the crooked bridge may be the right and best decision. But it is no cause to laud Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for a 'bold and wise decision'. On the other hand. Abdullah should be held accountable for sacrificing principle for profit. Why?

Abdullah and his gang were part of the government which approved the bridge. He and his gang are also the same gang which rejected their own decision after almost three years in office. If the bridge is wrong now, it was also wrong when they approved it. The principle then was that the bridge was right. In now deciding against it Abdullah has sacrificed principle for profit. What profit? Profit to protect his job!

This episode has shown Abdullah to be a man:

1. Without principle. He has lost his moral ground as PM. He does not even have the honesty to admit that he was wrong when he approved the bridge. It is no excuse to say it was approved during Mahathir's regime. Abdullah was part of the regime and to protect his job he caved in to Mahathir. If the bridge was wrong then, he should have quit then as a matter of principle.

2. Despite his professed piety and Islam Hadhari, this episode illustrates that Abdullah is a hollow person when it comes to principles and deeds. He has not the conviction and principle to stand by his word.

3. He is not an honest person if during his three years in office he continued to allow the construction of the CIQ building at the cost of RM700m when there were doubts about the viability of the bridge.

In other words Abdullah knowingly continued to pour taxpayers' money into a doubtful scheme. Where is the honesty and credibility in his words and actions?

If one is to review the bridge project, it is symptomatic of the decisions and behaviour of Abdullah's during his almost three years in office. Decisions are made for expediency, not on principle.

In making this comment, I am not saying that the bridge is right or wrong. My point is to show the unprincipled behaviour and lack of honesty of some of our leaders despite their professed piety and honour. Of course, they all say they are honourable men.
