The bridge fiasco highlighted a few things. Among them the weakness of the prime minister and his entire cabinet.
If the bridge is really justified and needed by both sides, it need not be crooked in its design. What scenic view do you expect over that dirty stretch of water? Not only that, the extra length will only increase the cost. It only make sense if you just want to purposely bloat its cost with the agenda of making larger commissions out of the project.
Malaysia wanted to twist Singapore's arms into agreeing in a dubious project. But the Singaporeans are not as shortsighted as the gullible Malaysians thought. Which brings us to the fact that the Malaysian armed forces is downright inferior compared to that of Singapore. If the Malaysian armed forces were effective and strong, Malaysia will not tuck its tail between its legs and run at the first sign of trouble.
A bully normally has an upper hand to railroad through it wishes and to intimidate its victim. Here, we have the bully running away without even a growl. It is no secret that the armed forces of Malaysia is a cash cow for Umno and purchases are made not for national operational needs but to line some people's pockets.
With so much defense money siphoned off and bungled defense projects, Malaysia has nothing but a scrawny military force.
National planning in Malaysia is haphazard. Well thought out strategies are absent. Haste is the order of the day and we see the wastage that resulted there. All round, hidden agendas are prevalent. Just dig up the link between the politicians and the contractors awarded these mega- projects.
