It is interesting to read about all the different opinions pertaining to the bridge. Since that can't be done, having a route through the Isthmus of Kra would be a great strategic victory for Malaysia.
Not only would it shorten the travel time, it would also provide a barrier against Thailand at our northern border. The British used Penang as their major port once because it was wise to do so. Now, they prefer Singapore to be the hub, because the Western governments are more welcome there and thus this status quo be kept.
Imagine the economic impact the Kra canal would have for the country as a whole. Pulau Langkawi and all the outlying islands could be turned into tourist havens for shipping personnel in transit. The development of the whole north-western region of Peninsula Malaysia will follow. A canal at the Isthmus of Kra would be like the Suez canal for Europe. See the significance?
There is no way Singapore will allow a land route to Malaysia to be removed unless it is replaced by an undersea channel. Neither would Malaysia give up its landed property along the KTM track. Such is the situation we are facing as neighbours and former 'marriage' partners.
Both countries have different strengths and weaknesses. It would be prudent to compensate each other for the good of the citizens of both countries in terms of economic, culture, race and religion. Or we can continue to try to outdo each other like former spouses out to win the favours of their children.
