The Writers Alliance for Media Independence (Wami) wishes to convey our condolences to MGG Pillai's family on the veteran journalist's early departure. His demise is a great loss, not only to his family and friends, but also to his numerous readers and most of all, to Malaysian journalism.

He was a reporter who throughout his life refused to be bent or silenced by political power, monetary temptations or libel suits. He also pioneered online journalism in the 1990s and spurred public discussion with his Sangkancil group which directly reached many citizens.

Pillai dreamt to live in a liberal Malaysia where no one would be detained without trial and no publication need to apply for printing permits from the government.

There is no better way of paying our tribute to this fearless fighter for press freedom than to dream his dream and fight his fight and to see some day the repeal of the Internal Security Act 1960 and Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.

The writer is secretary of the Writer Alliance for Media Independence (Wami).
