The rot in Malaysian politics is getting more rotten by the day. The latest, involving the PM's directive to BN MPs to toe the party's (Umno leaders') line regardless of issue, is another step towards total decay.

Other letters here exhort Malaysians to exercise their voting right during the next election to avert the descent of Malaysian politics into total corruption. But is this a feasible action given the state and nature of the opposition in the country?

There is the pro-Chinese (so labeled) DAP, the fundamentalist PAS and the weak Keadilan. Then there is the corrupt, unscrupulous BN Goliath. What choice does the Malaysian voter have?

There was, for a moment, a glimmer of hope when the BN MPs decided to support Shahrir Abdul Samad and follow him in 'walking the talk'. That, however, was short-lived and we are back to square one with the PM's directive. Something needs to be done. Here is a suggestion.

Right thinking MPs in the Backbenchers Club could break away from BN and set up a new multiracial party under Shahrir's leadership while still remaining as MPs. They could call it the PN (Perikatan Nasional - National Alliance Party) to revive the harmony, spirit and morality that once existed.

Of course, these 'rebellious' MPs would lose out on all the goodies such as those enjoyed by the Jasin MP. Their reward, however, would be far greater and something that money cannot buy - respect and peaceful sleep earned by serving the people and receiving an honest remuneration.

These MPs can rest assured that they will have the support of most Malaysians in their political struggle against the BN. They can also face the next elections with the people fully behind them. The memory of the current rot in BN would still be fresh in the minds of Malaysians in 2008 and their votes cannot be bought with money or threats then.

Current opposition parties which subscribe to the PN spirit could merge with PN now or later, or at least cooperate with the party to take on the BN Goliath. In the original legend, Goliath was slain by David by employing the right strategy. A strategy has been suggested here. It will, of course, need the full commitment and leadership of our Malay brethren besides the full support of the others to succeed. Can this happen?
