Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's legacy is over and he should remain in retirement. You have made some good and some bad decisions and we all still love you because we chose you as our prime minister then.

Today, we have elected Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and we will support him, rightly or wrongly because we are one nation, one people and one voice. Pak Lah is the undisputed leader and we have to agree with him whether we like it or not.

For more than two decades under the Mahathir stewardship, the following issues still remain unanswered by Mahathir:

Education - Why was medium of instruction for schools changed from English to Bahasa Malaysia? Following this, why the teaching of Maths and Science changed from Bahasa Malaysia to English?

If the students cannot excel in these two subjects in their own language, what do we expect now that it is in a foreign language. Is it not better if you just make English language a compulsory subject and allocate it more hours?

Vernacular primary schools should be allowed to grow. If parents choose these schools (SRJKs) there must be good reasons. Did we try to find out the reasons behind this choice and solve the mystery? I wanted to send my eldest son to a national school (SMK) in 1999 but changed my mind and send him to an SRJK instead. I have no confidence in the national schools which have teachers more interested in teaching their religion instead of providing an all-round education to the young innocent minds.

My eldest son, however, is in a national school because I cannot afford to send him to a private college. But I also wanted him to grow up as a true Malaysian, conscious that there are three major races in Malaysia. To my surprise, most of his classmates are Chinese with a few Indians and no Malays! Mind you, this SMK located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur not some Chinese new village. I do not want to speculate as to why this is so.

During my secondary school days in Johor, my classmates and I used to travel to the Felda schemes to visit all my Malay classmates and I can still recall the fond memories as we were treated to all the Malay delicacies.

More than two decades of Mahathir's leadership and our rakyat is more divided than ever.
