I refer to your special report Khairy for Umno vice-president?

So much have been written of political camps and cliques supporting or not supporting Khairy Jamaluddin for his political ascendancy to stand for election of a vice-president in Umno. It seems worthless or useless to talk about a candidate's qualifications, capabilities and commitment to serve the party and the people within Umno politics today.

What is important in Umno now is which camp or team has the greatest influence and how one can be killed in one's political career if one makes the wrong move. In today's international politics and globalisational trade, we need very capable leaders - particularly from the younger generation - to lead this country in the global arena to meet challenges now and in the future.

Najib Razak was likewise identified and he entered Parliament when he was 21 years old. So what is so bad about Khairy becoming a MP at the age of 30 when he is even better qualified being a political economist from Oxford - a rarity for Malaysians and even rarer still for the Malays. A capable chap should not be sidelined just because he a son-in-law of the prime minister, or a son or daughter of the prime minister.

The Malays must broaden their thinking, they must first think of this nation and then think of party politics and its camps or teams. Elect leaders who are best qualified, righteous and capable and the party will shape up by itself because of the solid and virtuous base.

Therefore, let us be mindful of this principle always. If we allow the camps or other diversions (like money politics) in any party then doomsday is just around the corner for the nation - like what we see in most African states. Let the best and the righteous rule this diverse nation of different peoples and religions.
