The present government wants to appear to be tough by digging up dirt from the past. It seems unable to flex its muscles on the issues of the day the increase in competition from the emerging economies of China and India, rising local costs and decreasing competitiveness, spiraling interest and inflation rates and the lack of a succession plan to migrate to a higher added value economy.

Like archeologists digging into a hole of history oblivious to the juggernaut of change charging full steam ahead on the ground up above, those in power are going to emerge from their explorations with fragments of events passed only to find out that the present has taken over.

We must refrain from trying to correct the wrongdoings of the past as it is a never-ending task. The crimes, if they were indeed that, have been committed. Let us leave it at that and move on. Let us now put measures in place to nip corruption in the bud so that we would be a more just and upright society if this is what we are seeking.

I would tell the present government to stop corruption in its tracks by first starting to make it reprehensible for even the lowliest traffic cop to accept a RM50 bribe.

Let us build an education system that creates an educated workforce that is relevant to the changing demands in the marketplace. Let us build a healthcare system that makes it unnecessary for anybody to seek medical care overseas. Let us build a protective fortress against external interests.

Let us be the architects of tomorrow and not the archeologists of the past.
