The inspector-general of police Musa Hassan recently announced that the police force needs another 30,000 personnel in order to manage effective policing because of the increasing rate of crime and the many cases remaining unresolved.

I request the IGP to personally ensure that this time round, the force takes serious care and gives proper instructions to correct the imbalance in the racial composition of the police force which now comprises about 90 percent Malays. Whilst the Chinese may be reluctant to join the force owing to the unattractive

remuneration, the Indians should have no reasons not to join the force.

Both the MIC and the MCA youth leaders at divisional levels should encourage the youth of their communities to turn up at the police recruiting and keep record of the numbers sent. This is so the recruiting officers will not sing the same song '... that the non-Malays are not interested in joining the police force' after the recruiting exercises.

Let the young Indian men serve the nation rather than becoming gangsters and robbers; the Indians having the highest record for this social ill. I propose that two-thirds of 30,000 number be reserved for non-Malays in the coming police recruitment drive to seriously correct the racial imbalance in the police force. Likewise for the army, navy, the air force and the civil service at the appropriate times later.
