I particularly took notice of the topics of race and religion in malaysiakini and I myself feel that I should express my views with regards to some of these topics being brought about.
Being a Malay/Chinese mix myself, I can personally describe what it actually feels like being a 'half-Ling' compared to someone who is just purely Malay or purely Chinese. I may be known officially as Malay and bumiputera but in me also beats the heart of a Chinese. I am extremely proud of my origins on both sides.
My Malay culture and heritage will always be there along with my Chinese culture. I find no problem in celebrating Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. Even if you're not Muslim or Malay, there is absolutely no harm in celebrating other people's religion and culture.
I believe in a Bangsa Malaysia, a unity of different cultures and races which is already happening as I type this. Its not just Malay-Chinese or Indian-Chinese anymore, it's now even Malay-Eurasians, Indian-Malay, Chinese-European, you get the drift. What's important is not the mix, but the passion in being a Malaysian.
I truly hate being called just a Malay or just a Chinese because I am mixed. There is no race definition for people like me and I think it's unfair that I am forced to choose either one when I am neither. In fact, I had no choice because if I wasn't 'defined' as Malay, I wasn't 'defined' as a bumiputera.
Let us stop being immature and inconsiderate on the topic of race. It is a dream of mine that one day we are just referred to as Malaysians, with all politicians fighting for Malaysians and not just for each other's race and religion. When one day, my kid can probably write on his examination form that he is a Malaysian, not Malay, not Chinese, not Indian, or 'dan lain-lain'.
Religion, as well, is evolving with the times. I believe everyone has a right to believe in what they want to without being forced to do so. It's always easy to tell the other person to convert because it's not you who is converting. Why should you force upon others your own religion? What is the point of conversion if you are only doing it for convenience and just for show? Isn't that being a hypocrite and damaging to Islam itself? If couples really love each other, then there should be tolerance and respect for each other's views and beliefs.
To Norlinda , I'm sorry but I believe that you are looking at the small picture. Your views depict a singular race with singular minded views on both race and religion. This land called Malaysia belongs to all the races and mixes, so stop being selfish.
