I refer to the malaysiakini report Bar Council ballot case: Two more new defendants .

Over the past years, the Bar Council has been raising issues that are relevant to our present day society. This must have unnerved some of the powerful 'untouchables' in society.

In order to put the Bar Council in bad faith and to destroy its image so that it is not seen without prejudices, there was an attempt to sabotage the recent Bar Council elections.

This hasn't happened in the history of council until this year. Who was responsible? Who are the persons involved?

The purpose in sabotaging the elections is to cast doubt on and possibly destroy the credibility of the Bar Council. No doubt the parties responsible were worried about the issues being championed by the council which included corruption, police reform, transparency and civil governance and government accountability amongst others.

In attempting to subdue the Bar Council, the parties responsible have taken on the attitude of 'I am mightier than thou'.

The Bar Council must strengthen its resolve and continue to raise issues important to all Malaysians. It must not let these issue die without being resolved, in particular the injustice perpetrated during the 1988 judicial crisis.

If the Bar Council allows itself to be sidetracked, it is playing directly into the unseen hands of these 'untouchables' who would want this vocal body to be pre-occupied with its internal matters with its credibility being questioned.

We appeal to the Bar Council to continue doing what it has been doing in public interest and reassure it that it has the support of the silent majority. The council must continue its march towards bringing closure on long-standing issues hindering the progress of Malaysian society.
