Subashini case: Civil courts, too, can serve justice

I refer to the letter Personal faith not an issue before syariah courts .

The writer has proposed 'try-it-first-and-see' attitude in this context. He has given a few assumptions of public reactions if the Syariah Court rules in favor of non-Muslims. While I appreciate the writer's predictions may be right, I can't understand why he has failed to understand the real message behind all the pleading from the non-Muslims (and some Muslims too!).

I do not doubt the fact that the Syariah Court may in the end rule in favour of Subashini but I am not comfortable with the fact that a case involving non-Muslim is being brought before the Syariah Court (a court set up abiding by syariah/Islamic laws).

It is a wrong step as non-Muslims are not supposed to be bound by Islamic laws. Further, I do not like to see this case set a precedent for future similar cases.

I assume the writer is a Muslim and he is very much comfortable with the syariah courts and trusts that the syariah courts will serve justice. No one will argue with that. But the civil courts too serve justice keeping in mind the interests of both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Therefore, we are just merely asking that the civil courts be used in this case as it involves both Muslims and non-Muslims.
