There is an excellent commentry by Kota Bahru MP Zaid Ibrahim in The Sun regarding the infamous judgment by the Court of Appeal on the Subshini case. I applaud Zaid for his frank and informed comments on a politically and religiously sensitive issue.

Any right thinking human being who has no other motives would agree with Zaid's findings. How two learned judges can even ask R Subshini to find relief with the syariah courts when she is a Hindu is quite baffling to say the least.

If courts in India start sending Muslims to Hindu courts (if there is such a thing) to solve their marital problems, the Muslims the world over will protest and rightly so, as this is manifestly wrong.

The message the judges are sending out to potential converts to Islam is this: You can dump your non-Muslim wife whenever you want, provided you find a Muslim woman who will marry you - you can have a new wife, a new life and also keep the spoils from your last marriage, while the poor woman who bore and took care of your children is left high and dry with no one to hear her cries.

It was Prophet Muhammad who said, "Paradise lieth at the feet of mothers". What lessons are Subshini's children learning when judgments like these are dished out without much thought for their mother and her sufferings?
