SK Wong writes a good letter (Help Indians get an education, Dec 9-10). Who is responsible for the education of Indians?
Fifteen thousand Indian children do not go to school every year. Only three out of 10 Indian kids pass the UPSR examination. Tamil Schools produce the worst results and Chinese schools produce the best results. Indians suffer the highest drop-out rates and Indians are under-represented in universities.
How can we talk about the MSC and boast of the Twin Towers when we have not solved basic problems affecting the education of Indians? Though I am sure that there are Chinese kids and Malay kids who also need help.
We should emphasise the basics now in our development plans. Education and housing. Health and nutrition.
It is ironic that Malaysian Indians languish on the margins of their society when their brethren in India and elsewhere make dramatic strides forward.
Who is at fault?
