The celebrations seems to be in a full swing at Bobby Jindal's ancestral Khanpura village in India as soon the announcement of his election as governor of the US state of Louisiana was confirmed.

The whole euphoria was reminiscent of the coverage of Indian American Sunita Williams after her space voyage. The country went overboard with extensive reporting on her, underscoring her Indian connection. Similarly, so it is with Jindal's victory, which is being hailed as an Indian achievement, despite his Roman Catholic background. But his social policies regarding prayers in school, favouring a ban on abortion and even opposing hate-crime laws, is not going down too well with Indian Americans.

There is no doubt regarding the pride that Indians feel when a son or a daughter of the soil achieves something out of the ordinary. But to label their success as 'Indian' achievement is a little unpalatable. It only undermines the numerous contributions of millions of Indians across the country day after day in making India the power it is fast emerging.
