It is hardly surprising to read in the daily newspapers about some politicians who have started making their rounds with empty promises and a fabricated clean image to win the support of prospective voters.

In Malaysia, for some unscrupulous politicians, politics is a fast track towards self-glorification, titles, positions and financial stability beyond their wildest dreams. Just ask the chap from Klang who, as a four-term assemblyman, seems to be so powerful that he can still get away with a litany of abuses.

Although there are some genuine people who really wants to serve his or her constituents and make their community a better place to live in, there are an equal number of those who are there for the various perks and benefits that come with being an elected people's representative.

For those gusty enough, politics is an easy career choice. It requires no minimum qualifications. As long as a person does not have any criminal record and is not declared a bankrupt, then he or she has every right to stand for elections and let the people decide on their suitability.

Once elected, they have an important role to play both in the state assembly and parliament. If they perform their roles admirably no one would hold grudges about people's representatives obtaining a handsome salary along with the perks.

Unfortunately, there are parliamentarians in the present set-up who seem to waste their time in the house by making unwarranted sexist and disparaging remarks against others or abusing their position to interfere with the function of government departments. There are also those with appalling parliament attendance records and yet continue to receive salary and enjoy the perks.

These are the ones we do not wish to see anymore in parliament. We hope our prime minister is also aware of who they are, regardless of their standing in the party.
