I agree with Discordant Dude’s letter Why should I go back to Malaysia?

There are many shortcomings in Malaysia especially those concerning the younger generation. Young Malaysians want changes for the better. They see successful Western nations as a model to emulate. However, are our young Malaysians ready to make the sacrifices their parents could not? Old habits die hard. There are many perks Malaysians enjoy that must be stopped.

Are we ready to treat foreign workers as decent human beings instead of slaves? Foreign workers deserve to be paid equal to Malaysians. Very few households in Western countries can afford hired help. Unlike Malaysia, their hired help enjoy rights and clear description of duties. You are either the gardener, the cook, the butler or the nanny unlike Malaysia where a single maid does everything.

Why do Malaysians prefer to emigrate to foreign countries? Undoubtedly for a better standard of living. In Malaysia, income disparity between rich and poor is ever widening. People are overworked and underpaid. Quality of life is bad with an increase in crimes such as mugging, pickpocketing and break-ins. The government is well aware of crime statistics as they have created a special police force to protect VIPs and VVIPs.

Many Western nations enjoy a better quality of life than developing nations such as Malaysia. Prices of houses are regulated and rent is controlled. There are no road tolls and the roads are wide and safe. Prices of cars are kept low to discourage people from using old cars and motorcycles. Strict labour laws protect workers from being laid off or having their wages cut. The unemployed are given assistance such as unemployment funds, training and job opportunities.

This is why we need a proper democracy in Malaysia. A political party that is assured of victory has no need to answer to the people.
