MGG Pillai's article entitled [#1] No sedition please, we're Malaysian [/#] (March 15) rings true. And it made me think somewhat about the double standards or selective prosecution being practised by the authorities.

Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor was charged with sedition for allegedly calling for daily street demonstrations to topple the government (which he later denied making). His alleged statement was made public by the famous government-controlled propaganda machine, Utusan Malaysia (in this case its weekend brother Mingguan Malaysia ).

Surprisingly (or perhaps not), as Pillai pointed out, Utusan was not called to task for 'spreading' this rumour (or is it just an allegation). I can personally guarantee you that if this supposed statement of Ezam was made public by Harakah or other opposition newsprint, the authorities will come down quick and hard on them!

Another thing: If Ezam's alleged statement was said to be dangerous as it can incite unrest, what about the statement made by Norkhaila Jamaluddin ([#2] Taman Lindungan clash not racial, say police [/#], March 9)? Will she be charged with sedition, too? If not, why? Wasn't her statement as dangerous if not worse than that alleged of Ezam? Why this double standard?
