I refer to the Malaysiakini article Hindu activism may upset poll calculations .
In regards to the article’s reference to a Hinduism upsurge and the fear it might create fear among the other races, I would like to offer my two sen's worth.
Hindraf. to me, is a reactive response to the oppression and denial of rights to the rakyat , in this case to the Indians. Going under a religious banner was also another reactive response due to the serious issue of denial of Hindu religious rights.
To claim, as the above article did, that the Chinese and Malays have not been emphatic to the situation is beyond me. Since Hindraf became a household name last November, many Malays and Chinese have joined their Indian brothers and sisters in their struggle.
In fact, the Malays and Chinese understand that the oppressed Indians are finally speaking up after many years of speaking up but not being heard. A peaceful demonstration or march is always a last resort and therefore it is only to be understood that the Indians (with many being Hindus) resorted to this avenue.
However, it is indeed ideal to have movements based on need rather than ethnicity or religion. I will support a leader be him or her a Hindu, Muslim or Christian if he or she can represent my rights in my motherland, Malaysia, without prejudice.
It will be ideal for all political parties to be secular in nature and represent the rakyat without compromising on cultural and religious beliefs.
Perhaps this could have been suggested by the writer rather than implying added fear (where there could be none) in his article. Journalists can be opinion leaders and their opinions serve the nation best when combined with good suggestions.
There is a wave of change over this country. The longing is there in the hearts of many Malaysians who want to put an end to a divide-and-rule policy based on ethnicity and religion.
May movements like Hindraf pave the way for a better system of governance which will rejoiced by every Malaysian. In that bright future one day, I strongly believe Hindraf will no longer exist.
