Malaysians have gone to town over the sodomy report against Anwar Ibrahim.
Everybody has jumped to the conclusion that Anwar is about to be framed and dragged off to jail over fabricated evidence of sodomy presided by a compliant judge. In a moment of high drama, Anwar runs to the Turkish embassy to take refuge.
This is indeed a damning indictment of how low the credibility of the police, the government and the judiciary has sunk in the eyes of the public.
When government leaders have to publicly deny that they are involved in a conspiracy to frame the accused, what more can we say? Anwar gets a geyser of sympathy and the government gets a black eye.
In a way, I am glad because it is a warning to the authorities that the infamous show trial of 1998 cannot be repeated or the tidal wave of public outrage and disgust will sweep the government from office.
