High-profile cases will forever be suspicious
Cynical | Jul 2, 08 4:42pm
Like most people, I am dumbfounded by the fresh allegation against Anwar Ibrahim, especially at this crucial juncture against our nation's political backdrop.

Considering the previous charges against him which are still fresh in our memories, I wonder how someone can really take us, the rakyat, as dumb fools who would believe anything that is thrown at us.

I will not be surprised if the police are able to find hair samples, perhaps finger prints or some other personal belonging of Anwar to tie him to the condo unit. After all, it is not difficult to get some if you are close enough to him.

Circumstantial evidence is enough to raise suspicions of the whole affair and tarnish his image. What is more difficult to prove in cases like this is perhaps that the actual allegation did take place.

It is a case of your word against mine. Who could tell of a sexual assault when two consenting adults enter a premise and something (if anything at all) happened?

But that perhaps is not totally necessary because by tainting his image, it is enough to throw Anwar off-balance from carrying out his political plan. It also gives those in power the excuse to arrest him on supposedly ‘reasonable’ grounds.

Those politicians who are quick to make assurances of Anwar's safety must be reminded of what happened to him in the prison cell in 1998 where he was beaten to the pulp by no other than those who were sworn to uphold justice and protect the citizens under their care.

To ask Anwar to have faith again in the process of the law - considering the courts convicted him despite glaring irregularities - is like asking the chicken to trust the fox that the latter means
no harm.

Unless the whole judicial and the law enforcement in the country is reformed, we will forever be suspicious of high-profile cases like this.
