I refer to the Malaysiakini article Mara is progress not fascism.
In reading what Azly Rahman wrote, I felt uneasy and also at the same time comforted. I felt uneasy because there are still some well-educated and progressive Malays who are able to determine and articulate the future of the Malays.
And I also felt comfortable because there is the group of undur Malays. In myself selfish desire, I would prefer the undur Malays to triumph so that the Malay in general will never progress and therefore the other races can progress further and survive and better themselves.
That means as long as the Umnoputeras continue with their existing racial policies, the non-Malay can continue to have a slice of the Malaysian cake as difficult as it may be. MCA and MIC will continue to be as corrupt as Umno and the country's economy will only spiral downwards.
MCA and MIC are as happy to see the corrupt Umno leading and they will pretend to continue saying that they will fight for the interests of their respective races. The main objective is that as long as the Malays remain a happy lot with their ‘walking stick’, the rest of the non-Malay Malaysians will just continue to work and work hard.
They’ll earn their keep, corrupt or otherwise, and give a little to the Malays leaders or the government servants. The Malays with the ‘little’ millions they get from their non-Malay associates or partners will remain economically docile and the non-Malays will be able to continue for another 50 years while the Malays can or will continue to claim that their equity still falls short of the NEP target and so on and so forth. The non-Malays can survive in that kind of situation.
But honestly, this is no good for Malaysia in general. The country will lag behind economically and the industries will decay. People will migrate and the country will return to the age of stagnancy.
The few Malays who benefitted from the existing policies will continue life as normal but the majority of the Malays will remain backward. The undur Malays will continue to blame other races. The country will inevitably enter into a stage of anarchy. I pray to God that this will not happen.
So I ask the progressive Malays and their silent majority who want mara and who want to advance to please heed the nation's progressive leaders to make Malaysia a leading nation in SEA if not Asia. How, you may ask.
The answer lies in the ability and willingness to take up challenges and competition. For without challenges and competition, you will never be able to stand up on your own. The non-Malays living in Malaysia have a culture of hard work and in taking up challenges and competition.
It is not that these people love challenges or competition but that it is inevitable and unavoidable. It is always a hard life and through generations, this has become a part of the in-built characteristic of the non-Malay. If the Malays want to advance, they must accept challenges and competition.
Other countries and other institutions are willing to welcome guests or talented people as they know that it is only good for the country or the institution. It seems there is no other choice, since the world nowadays is border-less.
I can only tell the undur Malays that you are doing a disservice to your race. Please take heed and do not let your irresponsible leaders lead you astray.
