Here are a few thoughts on the ongoing bailout of LRT. I agree that the government has a 'duty' to 'take over' the LRT companies so they can continue to provide services uninterrupted to the country.

But, instead of 'giving' these companies RM5.6 billion, it should allow them to declare bankruptcy. The government can then buy them at a token price, say maybe just RM1, and assume some of their debts since their net asset values are negative.

The RM5.6 billion can be put to much better use. Firstly, it can be used to retire some of the firms' debts. The money can be used to recapitalise the local banks badly affected by the 'forgiven' LRT debts. And in return the LRT can issue shares for the government, in other words no 'risk-free-free-lunch' at the taxpayers' expense.

Finally, if there is any money left from the RM5.6 billion, the government should use it to expand the LRT network and improve the service and convenience.

LRT services can then go on uninterrupted and jobs would be saved, although the 'ex-managers or owners' of the LRT companies would whine. As Mr Spock would say, "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".

This is a simplistic solution and probably it's too late to reverse the ongoing LRT bailout scheme. There could be competent people in government who can refine and rework this 'bailout' plan. It is definitely a better plan than the current one. If there is going to be another 'bailout', the government should remember Mr Spock's wise words and remember the 'many' whose lives and future would be greatly affected by its decisions.
