'Unity gov't will curb Umno/BN abuse'

vox populi big thumbnail ‘With Pakatan Rakyat in the government, Umno/BN no longer has a free hand in governing Malaysia. That is why PAS is proposing the talks.’

On Non-Muslims cheated over proposed 'unity gov't'

NM: A lot of people are against the ‘unity government because they get the wrong impression from the media that the proposed talks are only between PAS and Umno.

A unity government is a government that consists of Umno, MCA, MIC, PAS, PKR, DAP and all the parties that were involved in and won in the last general election.

PAS has made that very clear but the media still plays up the idea that the talks are only between PAS and Umno jand is ust to break up Pakatan Rakyat.

I think this unity government is a brilliant idea to curbing Umno/ BN from continuing to abuse their power in managing Malaysia.

With Pakatan Rakyat in the government, Umno/BN no longer has a free hand in governing Malaysia. That is why PAS is proposing the talks.

If Umno accepts, then PAS and Pakatan Rakyat are the winners because we shall be able to ensure that there will be no more abuse of power by Umno/BN.

If Umno refuses, then PAS/ Pakatan Rakyat also are also the winners because that shows Umno/BN is not sincere and not willing to govern Malaysia without corruption and so on.

On Foreign maids to get one day off a week

John Johnson: People who object to other human beings having their well-deserved rest day are selfish, greedy and hypocrites to the core..

Come on people, don’t give flimsy excuses for why maids should not be given an off day. Our Malaysian employers are making maids work up to 18 hours and paying them peanuts.

We are talking of human beings here who deserve to have an day off for leisure. Even the employment Act clearly states that we work only 44 hours a week.

Due to greed and selfishness, we Malaysians are willing to degrade our fellow neighbours who just happen to need the employment to survive.

SH Huang: I am indeed shocked and dismayed that even religious people who are employers of maids are not in favour of giving them a day off every week.

Are maids not human beings? Are they machines who should be at the beck-and-call of employers 24 hours a day ? Even machines break down and refuse to function, what more human beings?

It makes no sense; and it is inhuman to treat maids as sub-humans. What is worse, some maids are supposed to keep male employers ' warm' in bed.

The ministry should immediately pass a Bill in Parliament, which is in session now, on a certificate of urgency. It is unnecessary to get public opinion on this issue.

Maids, who are usually foreigners , come here to earn some money and send it home to help their families while employers of maids need their services.

It is a win-win situation. Let us not make them slaves or sex slaves. The ministry should never condone this. By delaying fast action, it is condoning this bestial act.

Malaysians should live in dignity; and should abhor and condemn any ill-treatment of maids.

On Pupil down with A(H1N1), school closes for 1 week

Harold Angus: Looking at the way the latest flu virus is spreading, it seems that the health authorities are not doing enough to reduce this health hazard.

We all know that no nation has been able to eliminate the threat and efforts have been mostly of quarantine and other social-distancing programmes.

When I returned home after spending three weeks abroad, I told my daughter that I would not visit them for a few days as I wanted a clean bill of health before I exposed them to any possible contagion.

Seven more cases, 42 in total suggests that we are just at the beginning of a long struggle to contain this menace.

I suggest the health and education authorities impose a few extra precautions if we truly want to reduce the spread of the disease.

Temperature-scanning has really a limited use as a person who is in the early stages has no abnormal temperature and gets past the scan without problems.

Since we cannot impose travel bans without major disruptions, we should require all students who travel abroad to practice a two-day self imposed quarantine after their return.

Parents who send their children back to school without the necessary delay should be subject to penalties.

On Gerakan slaps Huan with 3-year ban

Nik V: For better of for worst, Pakatan should court Gerakan and openly invite them to be part of Team Malaysia.

While within Pakatan there are still elements of racism within some of the component parties and members, the bottom-line is whether people perceive these parties as being more Malay, Chinese or Indian.

The truth is the current make up of PKR, DAP and PAS are technically not raced based parties. Each haave different ideologies but PAS can consist of Malay, Chinese and Indian Muslims.

DAP appears more Chinese but it is actually a multiracial party that has withstood the test of time and has had the most consistent ideology of fighting for a Malaysia for all Malaysians.

PKR is the fledgling multiracial party that has gained the most from perhaps being the new kid on the block at a time when the rakyat were most ready for change.

So invite Gerakan and PPP for better or for worse so that Malaysia can one day really have political parties that defend all Malaysians even with their different ideologies.

Leave Umno, MCA and MIC to continue to be racist parties (which strangely benefit only a few of the elite the most). We just need to let racist parties grow old and die out.

It is time we all learn to move forward for a Malaysia for all Malaysians and not what politicians tell us it should be.

Politicians are employees to the government elected by the people. Let us tell the politicians, and that includes those in Pakatan, how we want a Malaysia for all Malaysians.

On MB vs MB: Where are Appeals Court's grounds?

Peter Ooi: The writer gave a very good analogy of a good judgement in the proving of a mathematical theorem.

Based on this, I read the analysis of Justice Aziz's judgement again by former Judge NH Chan. It was indeed a classic piece of judgement which won praise from Chan himself.

Yes, the flow of his reasoning for arriving at his decision was really like proving a mathematical theorem. And he must have taken great pains to write such meticulous judgement.

As every one knows , the Court of Appeal overturned Justice Aziz’s decision in just five minutes but till today the written judgements are much awaited.

All that the Court of Appeal judges have to do is to prove Justice Aziz wrong in law by citing examples and authorities . In this Internet and computer age, such sources are readily available at the click of a mouse.

And with so many legal assistants at their disposal, their jobs of looking for these sources is very much easier. It is puzzling that they are taking so long to come out with their written judgements.

A judge’s duty is a very responsible one. Their judgements, especially those from the from the higher courts, will decide the directions of similar cases.

Any wrong judgements or decision will breed more wrongs in the future.

On It's time Malaysia changes for the good

Goh: I would like to recommend Malaysian to watch ‘24', one of the most popular TV series in America.

The scenario is of bad politicians always around the President’s men and even the President is not above the law.

In one of the seasons, the President of US himself was apprehended for investigation into the murder of ex-president.

In Malaysia, the system is still not good enough to investigate those in high office who are suspected of wrongdoings.

Most of the time, these people are either given a warning or transferred to another place to divert the public’s attention.

If our country wants to move higher from this low-level office management , we have to start by investigating arresting people who are involved in various scandals involving public money.

As far as I am seeing it right now, in Malaysia nobody can reveal the facts of a wrongdoing because they instead will be detained for questioning or even worse, accused of treason.

On An Act that will fix the racists

Baiyuensheng: In the above article, there is this quote that I would not have known if not for Kua.

I just started work that year and a Christian friend of my mine who stayed in the same house was arrested.

Anyway the quote:

‘In 1987, Umno Youth organised a rally at the Jalan Muda Stadium in Kuala Lumpur at which banners read: ‘May 13 has begun: Soak the ‘keris’ in Chinese blood’, among others’.

Well, with these kind of sentiments, our country could be embroiled in another Sri Lanka-type of chaos which I hope our leaders who to love this country, will try to avoid.

For a start, let us implement this Race Relations Act.

On National Service - the suffering continues

Lim Keat Hoe: William Leong's article is a very balanced argument for appropriate changes to the National service programme.

But why are the authorities so resistant to change?

If it (NS) is as good as the authorities have always maintained, all teenagers must go for National Service.cPeriod.

With the initiator of the project now the PM, it is too much to expect him to eat the humble pie? But he should show he has some leadership qualities.

Make the right changes now and show that you are willing to review the NS’ implementation. How? Just read Leong's article.
