Delegates at PRM's 35th National Congress in Kuala Lumpur today backed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) proposed by Keadilan to expedite the merger process between the two parties.

Party president Dr Syed Husin Ali said the delegates gave the mandate to the party leadership to complete the merger process.

Syed Husin said there were minor "insignificant" changes to the agreement on the merger between the two parties.

He declined to elaborate beyond saying that the MOU will be signed and its contents made public very soon.

"Keadilan needs the MOU to lobby support for the merger from its delegates at the party's coming Annual General Meeting in October," said Syed Husin, at a press conference after the congress this evening.

"The effort on our part as far as the merger is concerned is complete. The ball is now at their (Keadilan) feet," he added.

The one-day congress attended by 115 delegates ended with Syed Husin being retained as the party's president for the fourth time.

The MOU is expected to be signed by the presidents of both parties in two weeks. The merger has been stalled as Keadilan failed to obtain a two-third majority at its AGM last year.

If the merger goes through PRM will dissolve and its 30,000 members nation wide will join Keadilan en bloc.

New name for party

Party delegates agreed to the MOU which will also see the new party named Parti Keadilan Rakyat Malaysia and the party logo incorporating PRM's red stripes on the left and right borders of the latter blue flag.

It is learnt that the MOU has also outlined the leadership line up to ensure adequate representation of leaders from both parties.

In an immediate response, Keadilan secretary-general Sahri Bahri said that he welcomed PRM's decision to support the MOU.

Sahri said that Keadilan will now take the necessary steps to expediate the merger process which is expected to be completed at the end of the year.

"We will make sure that we get adequate support for the merger in the coming AGM," he told malaysiakini .
