Politicians all chameleons - some ordinary, others extraordinary

vox populi small thumbnail 'So what on earth is the difference between Najib and Anwar in the matter of Malaysia-US relations and Palestine? None whatsoever I'm afraid. And Khairy is not likely to be any different.'

'Anwar the chameleon extraordinaire'

Orang Biasa: Actually to use the term 'Jewish aggression' is not correct as there are many Jews around the world who are not Zionist and are even against Zionism - the ideology behind the state of Israel. So 'Zionist aggression' is quite correct as it refers to an ideology, not a race of people.

For Anwar Ibrahim to express regret over the quite appropriate usage of the term does indeed raise a lot of questions. Ditto trooping off to Washington DC to kowtow to some 'influential' people there barely a month after being at the head of an anti-US Middle-East policy/anti-Israel demonstration here in KL.

Was the latter all a charade, a pro-Palestine lip service for domestic consumption while the former was to soothe spooked allies?

So what on earth is the difference between Najib Razak and Anwar in the matter of Malaysia-US relations and Palestine? None whatsoever I'm afraid - pay lip service to the Palestinian struggle but try not to tread on Uncle Sam's toes while doing it. Sad. And Khairy Jamaluddin is not likely to be any different.

Chiaw Hong: All Malaysian politicians, especially the ‘Ketuanan Melayu' types, have to be chameleons if they want to be successful politicians in Malaysia. Khairy calls Anwar a "chameleon extraordinaire" and not just a chameleon, because he knows that he himself is also a chameleon, but only an ordinary one.

The ‘mamak' chameleon politicians are even more extraordinary than Anwar. They are able to change their DNA from that of Indian to Malay without having to undergo genetic engineering. They can do it by thought, just like some of the characters from X-Men.

Keturunan Malaysia: Khairy, please remember that for one average Anwar Ibrahim, there are dozens of much less than average jerks of every order in your club. If you cannot attend to all at once, it would be nice if you can list them in order of priority and attend to them in order. Maybe then, Malaysians as a whole will react more calmly to your words and actions.

Magei: By the way, is the Muslim community against all Jews or only the Israeli government. I really wouldn't want one day that the non-Malays in Malaysia hate all Malays instead of just hating a corrupt, mean and arrogant government that happens to have a majority of Malay leaders. Let's think before we speak or be damned forever.

Parvinder Kler: Sure, all politicians are hypocrites but we the citizens should haul all of them up on it. We should be concerned at how Anwar doesn't mind getting all anti-Semitic domestically and then kowtow to the Israeli lobby when he is overseas.

And of course, we should be concerned when BN talks of KPI targets yet continues its corrupt behaviour. We should condemn both sides and try keep both sides honest. It's not good versus evil here - there are many shades of grey.

Court victory a feather in cap for Uthaya

Bharathy: Uthayakumar has contributed greatly to the political discourse in this country. He has put forward many new truths, some now commonplace, some slowly finding acceptance but grudgingly, while some others have yet to be accepted.

Galileo during his lifetime was hounded to death by the Church to recant his discovery and subsequent exposition that the Earth was the centre of the universe. He did not, he suffered greatly till his death, but the truth prevailed and we have the world we have, because of this kind of courageous and uncompromising grasp of the truth.

We need to rise up above the person and objectively evaluate what the person is saying and what all this is telling us.

Habib Rak: I agree that Uthayakumar has dedicated his life to fight for the downtrodden. He has many achievements and the justice that he facilitated for the family of Anuar Sharip is a stellar example. Thank you, Uthaya, and keep it up.

Most of us want Uthaya to rise further and for him to take his rightful place as an MP to champion the rakyat's needs. Whilst we admire his determination and perseverance, we are also able to see his rough sides that needs smoothening.

Many of us have given sincere suggestions on how he can do that but somehow it's not getting through yet. Nevertheless, I'm positive that a lift shall happen for Uthaya, enabling him to contribute on a bigger scale.

Pete Stop: Indeed, in the end, it is the taxpayer who has to pay for the current government's incompetence. Uthaya, most of us have supported you, especially when you were under ISA. However, as pointed out by Terrence Netto, don't let your ego get in the way.

Not everything can be solved by the stroke of a pen. Otherwise, you are just a liability, instead of being a partner others can work with. In this world, as a mature person, we need to be interdependent, not just blindly independent.

Mr Afee: I always admired Uthaya for his persistent struggle against injustice committed upon the downtrodden. He has proven himself now to be a non-racist by getting a RM1.4 million compensation for the widow of a Malay man. So all those who have been accusing him of being racist must stop now.

It is partly through his and Hindraf's efforts the 2008 tsunami took place - waking up a majority of the Indian voters and managing to influence them into voting for the opposition. But as of late, he has some misunderstanding with the Pakatan leaders and has not been actively influencing the Indian voters as evidenced in the Hulu Selangor by-election.

I do sincerely hope that Uthaya and the Pakatan leaders will come to an amicable understanding. I also salute the presiding judge who was totally impartial in awarding the compensation.

Donald Lim ducks KJ's questions on Proton

Swipenter: What is there to answer? Everybody knows the answer to that question. Nobody wants to touch Proton anymore. They had their chance but they blew it all in the name of national interest and pride (read: self-interest like APs and supply chain). We also lost the chance to Thailand to become the car manufacturing hub for the region, again due to self-interest.

The global car industry has changed so much as a result of advancing technology and design innovation but what has Proton got to show? Proton can't smell even a relative newcomer like China.

How long do you think that we can go on subsidising a third-rate car manufacturer like Proton? Only a miracle can make Proton a global and competitive car manufacturer, but how many of us believe in miracles?

Lohyw: Proton is a national objective to enrich BN cronies through subsidies. It was never - I repeat never - meant to be a profitable and serious player in the motor industry. It will end up like Bank Bumiputera, Perwaja Steel, MAS, Felda, PKFZ, and many, many more. Satu lagi projek dari kerajaan Barisan Nasional.
