Double nuke plants: The debate continues

vox populi small thumbnail 'Going nuclear is alternative technology. It is a lot safer than most think, and the only setback is the radioactive waste.'

DPM mum on N-plants, slams Anwar

ACoward: Why we keep on talking about nuclear energy when Malaysia is having the advantage on tapping clean, safe, natural and cheap energies like wind, solar, sea and water? Where are our research teams? Why do we let these precious resources go to waste and seek dangerous nuclear energy instead?

Amaso: DPM Muhyiddin Yassin is a blatant liar for saying, "But we have not made any decision on it yet" when Peter Chin announced last Sunday that Malaysia plans to build two nuclear plants.

Lim Chong Leong: So the plan from Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Peter Chin's announcement was his own? He did not raise it in cabinet so that the DPM is at least be informed of it? So when Chin says there are plans to build two nuclear reactors, whose plans are these?

Anonymous1: Malaysia has been testing nuclear since the 80s. It is not new. In the US, they are building more nuclear power plants, and also in many parts of France, UK and China. It is just that they do not publicise it.

Going nuclear is alternative technology. It is a lot safer than most think, and the only setback is the radioactive waste.

Ghkok: I salute the Penang and Selangor governments for barring the construction of nuclear power stations on their soil.

On top of that, Pakatan Rakyat should also make a clear statement now that all questionable transactions executed, or decisions made, prior to Pakatan's takeover of the federal government will be subjected to investigation after Pakatan's takeover and will be annulled (by the force of legislation, if necessary) if the transactions or decisions are found to be inherently lopsided or grossly against the interest of the country.

This statement shall be a warning so that all parties can't say that they have not been pre-warned of possible annulation of contract by the new federal government. In particular, Pakatan should say that they will reverse the decision on nuclear power plants once they take power at federal level, even if contracts have been signed.

This is so that any company will think twice about entering into any agreement with the current government.

Rolls-Royce: What opinions are you seeking, DPM? Opinions similar to yours - that nuclear power is the way forward to our energy needs? If that is what you are waiting for I am afraid that is not what you are going to get.

What precisely is involved in a nuclear plant? How critical is it that we must have it? Who are the promoters of the project? Which successful nuclear plant have they managed? You said it is cheap, but do you exactly know all the costs (both development and operating, and both explicit and implicit) involved?

What alternative energy sources do we have, and have we considered them? Do we really know how to handle nuclear plants properly, given our level of professionalism and work culture? Do you know exactly where do you want to site the two plants - in Pekan and Pagoh, or in Permatang Puah and Ipoh Barat?

Anonymous2: We should build one nuclear plant next to Muhyiddin's house, and the other one, next to Najib's house. And we shall see whether they are still strong advocates of nuclear power.

Gov't to respond to Pakatan's 100-day reform plan

Wira: Muhyiddin, the Pakatan states of Penang and Selangor started rewarding special bonuses for civil servants in the state with their fiscal surpluses before Putrajaya responded the same with their fiscal deficits.

The federal budget is 400 times of that of the state of Penang. If the Penang government can manage surpluses with that little money, think of the billions that could be saved if Pakatan ruled the country. That difference is corruption.

Anonymous: If Anwar Ibrahim really cares about the teachers, he would have raised the teachers' pay 10 or 15 years ago. Why now? He is another empty vessel making noise. He was education minister and later finance minister - he could have raised the pay years ago if he was sincere in doing so.

But in the end, who raise the government servants' pay? The man was Pak Lah (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi). So what Anwar said now is totally irrelevant. Just another empty promise, perhaps even a lie.

Sarawakian: "However, Muhyiddin reiterated Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's intention to pore through the 100-day reform plan. ‘And then we'll respond accordingly,' he said."

Is this how the government operate? Why only response after looking at the opposition plan? Shouldn't the BN initiate their own plan? After all, they have our money to do what they like. Bankrupt of ideas? No wonder they need Apco to prop them up.

Anwar: Apco is about 'haphazard spending'

Sharman: Why are we discussing the origins of Najib's 1Malaysia slogan? What matters is the fact that RM77 million of our hard-earned money was used in a campaign which nobody seems to understand. Even the members of the cabinet appear lost with this 1Malaysia slogan. This is the issue that Anwar is highlighting, and so far, PM Najib has failed to explain.

StevenForMalaysia: Is a big shame that Najib have to get foreigners to help him orchestra his management of the country. What a shame. Watch out all fellow Malaysians, these idiots are cheating us to the core; playing the Malay sentiment to protect them as they rob the wealth of this country.

Abasir: Apco's KPI should have been written as follows: "Ensure and independently prove that 90% of Malaysians, including all cabinet members past and present, are equally clear about what 1Malaysia means and declare themselves to be unequivocally 1Malaysians first before anything else within 12 months of appointment."

Paying them RM77 million could have been made contingent on such an achievement.
