YOURSAY 'EC should wake up and smell the coffee. An overwhelming majority of Malaysians feel that the electoral rolls are dirty and the election process cannot be trusted.'
92pct M'sians want voters roll cleaned up before GE
Ferdtan: When 92% Malaysians want the voters roll cleaned up before the GE, it shows one thing: Malaysians are in the loop on what is happening around the issues of electoral process.
Malaysians, unlike in the past, are no longer indifferent, but are knowledgeable about what is going on in the political scene.
This is largely due to Pakatan Rakyat's sensational daily exposures of the 'mistakes' and alleged frauds in the electoral rolls, and the education on the electoral process by the various Bersih's committees.
The success of dissemination of such information down to the people on the ground culminated in the historic April 28 Bersih 3.0 rally whereby 300,000 Malaysians participated in Malaysia and all over the world.
Kgen: EC should wake up and smell the coffee. An overwhelming majority of Malaysians feel that the electoral rolls are dirty and the election process cannot be trusted.
The EC has done nothing to dispel this perception but worsened it with ridiculous excuses for irregularities.
In fact, this must be the only election commission in the world which pushed for laws to reduce transparency like banning polling agents from poll centres and removing publishers' names from printed campaign material.
The EC should realise that public perception of a dirty victory by BN does not help BN at all, in fact it will lead to the destruction of BN.
A government which is perceived as having cheated its way into office will be viewed as illegitimate and has no moral authority to govern.
Anonymous_3f4a: This Merdeka Centre survey shouldn't come as surprise to anyone as the rakyat have known it for a long time that the electoral roll has been flawed through dubious practices in order to achieve desirable results for the Umno-BN government.
The result clearly shows there is a complete mistrust of the electoral roll. Without a clean electoral roll, any election held would be an exercise in futility as the results would not be acceptable and the government duly elected would not be able to command the trust and confidence of the rakyat.
Kairos: No matter how you look at the electoral rolls, the vast majority of Malaysians want changes to it. The prevailing perception is that the present rolls are grossly unfair and lopsided in favour of BN.
There are too many irregularities in the rolls including phantom voters and gerrymandering to render it fair. The rakyat does not really care who wins or who loses the election, as long as it is fair, clean and transparent.
At the present moment, it is widely perceived, and rightly so, to be engineered and manipulated in favour of BN. As long as this grievance is not addressed, BN can win but it's because it cheated and it has no integrity. It will always be seen as a crooked and illegitimate government.
What is alarming at the present moment is that the government is behaving like a big bully trying to intimidate and force the people into submission. They can beat them up and even imprison the people, but they can never stifle the human spirit.
FairMind: That is the strongest statement yet from the silent majority. Over 90% of Malaysians are not happy with the state of the electoral process and the present management in the Election Commission (EC).
They will definitely punish BN if they call for an election without the electoral process being cleaned up. The present government better heed the wishes of the silent majority or face the consequences.
Blind Freddo: This information is guaranteed to lead to a pseudo clean-up of the electoral roll. BN will make every pretense of going through the process, but in fact nothing will be done and it's quite probable the roll will be further corrupted.
However, the mindless masses will be convinced - as they always are - and you know what that means. But what can you do, BN is cunning and driven by greed and the lust for power.
Meanwhile, the opposition sits on its hands and gripes about eggs and stones instead of taking control of the situation and promoting a new Malaysia that means something more than what they are offering now.
Dont Just Talk: The balance of the 8% who do not like the electoral roll to be cleaned up belong to the ‘kotor' electorates whose leaders and members are from the Umno-BN group. Period.
Do the 92% Malaysians trust the EC chairperson and his deputy to be neutral when discharging their duties? The answer remains ‘No'.
Kgen: Do you get the message, EC? More than 90% of the public believe the electoral rolls are dirty and no amount of simpleton explanation by the EC chief and his deputy is going to change this damning perception.
So stop making excuses and clean up your act. A victory by BN viewed as electoral fraud is worth nothing. BN will have no moral authority to govern.
Khairul Said: It's odd that there are 8% of Malaysians who are deadly against free and fair elections. Who are they? Everyone knows.
