In Umno culture, extravaganza is the game

YOURSAY 'Where did Mohd Ali get the money to finance such an extravagant wedding? On a chief minister's pay? Really?'

Ali Rustam's son's wedding sets M'sian record

your say Jimmy Ng: A couple of BN workers randomly approached me by the roadside to offer an invitation to the wedding claiming that Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam was inviting citizens to the event and there was free ‘makan' (food) to be had.

I declined as I preferred not to lower my pride and dignity and shame myself. Hmm... 130,000 guests at the CM's son wedding?

If at RM10 per person, this wedding would have cost at least RM1.3 million. I wonder who paid the bill. And where did Mohd Ali get his money from? Or did the state government have to ‘subsidise' it as well? Just curious to know.

Mushiro: This a mockery of good governance, a mockery of decency and a mockery of Islam.

When it is very clear that a politician has amassed wealth illegally from the powers that were mandated to him, then he should be ashamed to flaunt this corrupted wealth to the public. But sadly, in Umno's culture it is their pride and norm to do this.

Gen2: In Islam, everything should be done in moderation. The wealth you have (if you gained it via the halal way) is actually not yours but on loan from Allah to be used for good purposes.

It's definitely not for throwing ostentatious wedding feasts. Why are the Malacca ulama so quiet?

Muak: Most ordinary Malaysians would have serious financial problems hosting 130,000 guests. Where did Mohd Ali get the money to finance such an extravagant wedding? On a chief minister's pay? Really?

ABU Member: If Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim or Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng or PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang do this, the whole of Malaysia would be up in arms. The corrupt Umno Baru would adamantly demand where their money come from.

But this episode is hosted by an Umno Baru warlord, and as such no BN warlords/members would dare ask the question.

Perhaps we would get the answer when Pakatan Rakyat takes over Putrajaya. We, the voters, will have to decide whether we want this mystery solved.

Retnam: I bet billionaire financier George Soros is funding this dinner.

Unspin: It is physically impossible to feed 130,000 guests in an eight-hour period because it meant serving 270 people every minute. I think that Bernama has "doctored" another zero to its story, i.e. the number of guests were 13,000 not 130,000.

Alfa: When Bernama reports this piece of news of an Umno leader, it is a world record of wedding attendees. If an opposition leader invites such a huge number of guests, the source of revenue for wedding expenses would be questioned.

Gerard Lourdesamy: Shouldn't the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) investigate this?

How can a mere chief minister on a salary of less than RM20,000 per month invite 130,000 guests to his son's wedding? Did the money drop from the sky?

Ren Ai: Congratulations to the newly-weds. Your fathers have toiled very hard to make the Guinness Book of Records, be thankful to them. To Ali Rustam, you have done well, haven't you?

Anonymous_rb345: Mohd Ali used his savings from since he was one year old to pay for this wedding.

Reveal cost of 'mega kenduri', Pakatan tells Ali

YF: Assuming that the food costs RM10 per person, that's a whopping RM1.3 million for food alone. And this is not inclusive of all the other arrangements that would probably cost another 100,000 or so.

So how did Ali Rustam manage to fork out so much money? Is the Malacca state coffers being used for this function?

Ali Rustam isn't very smart by exposing himself to public scrutiny. When you rob the rakyat, don't flaunt your riches or you will be easily caught out. But then, this is Bolehland where Umno crooks can roam free to plunder and spend extravagantly.

The Reaper: A public figure who openly shows off like this is bound to attract unwanted attention, so do you think he is smart or dumb? The problem with these guys, they think they can do anything and not answerable to anyone.

Fair&Just: At the very least, the poor rakyat have the chance to witness the grandiose and pompous gatherings of the very rich and powerful just like as in medieval times where the rich can flaunt their wealth unashamedly as if it is their God-given right to possess so much wealth, while the debt of the nation is now to the tune of RM500 billion over, not including the unrealised "hidden debt".

Onyourtoes: Please don't insult the CM, this is chickenfeed. Opulent home, opulent lifestyle, exotic holiday home, lavish dinners and kenduri are our way of life; they are part of our culture a long time ago, so please grow up.
