YOURSAY ‘So come March 9, I hope the BN gov't will not sign any major contracts, give out more taxpayers' money and make any new policies.'
BN becomes caretaker gov't on March 8
Ksn: This article by constitutional law expert Tommy Thomas contains some good information for the public.
I hope the attorney-general (AG) has read the article and accordingly advise the government, the PM, their Majesties our rulers and the civil service to grasp the importance of our constitution, and to act and fulfil their respective roles with great responsibility.
That is the law, there is no running away from it. It is Malaysia's future we are talking about.
Iloveallmalaysians: Tommy Thomas is not an impartial person. In fact, he is partisan and as such, anything he says is suspect and leaning towards the opposition.
PM Najib Razak and BN know what they can and cannot do under the constitution. A caretaker government does not stop working, and yes, no new policies nor awarding of contracts in the name of the government, but all policies previously made can be carried out.
Is Tommy saying that a caretaker government cannot do anything? Then there will be lawlessness.
Multi Racial: I agree with the writer that besides politics, there are sinister reasons behind the delay. Unfortunately, our constitution allows it.
So come March 9, I hope the BN government will not sign any major contracts, give out more money from taxpayers' coffers and make any new policies.
We will have to wait until the new Pakatan Rakyat government takes over, which I am sure will happen if there is no fraud.
Armageddon: Najib and his team must be busy reading through the constitution and the small print of the law to look for clauses to delay the election indefinitely.
iVote: Umno knows too well that they have a 40 to 60-day period to stay on in government, which is why PM Najib Abdul Razak has failed to call an earlier general election.
Now the ruling party is deliriously fiddling on the next move but there is definitely no time left. Their time to stay on at Putrajaya will end soon.
People's power will see a change of government. Pakatan will take control. There is little doubt.
Anonymous_4031: I just wonder whether a caretaker government can make use of government planes, government machinery, government staff and taxpayers' money to pay for all their expenses and travel after March 8, 2013.
2zzzxxx: Umno knows it will lose in GE13 and it is doing all the dirty work behind the scene as we speak - planning and scheming.
I cannot think of a government in the world as evil as this one. And they consider themselves to be religious people at that.
Heavywater: Najib knows he cannot afford to hold the election now as his position is very weak. He still needs time to buy over more supporters.
I believe Najib will use the 'caretaker' position for maybe another year or so. He doesn't give a damn about constitutional law, only his own survival.
Cogito Ergo Sum: So what happens to those waiting for BR1M 2.0? Poor sods! Anyway, this government lost its legitimacy a long time ago with the discovery of phantoms and foreigners in the electoral roll.
Apapunboleh: BN will claim BRIM has been allocated before March 8 and therefore legitimate. Dispensing it now is not unconstitutional.
Can a caretaker PM utilise government property such as cars? Otherwise all BN ministers will have to use their own vehicles.
P Dev Anand Pillai: This is a good piece by Tommy but unfortunately, there are many who think that only a coalition with a solid ideology can ever rule this country.
We are nearing a two coalition system but there are many who expect miracles to be performed by the new coalition which they would expect of the BN. The question would be is it fair?
The Indians, who never questioned the BN on massive corruption and siphoning of government funds by its politicians and their parties, are now reticent in giving their votes to the Pakatan.
Therefore the outcome of this elections would not be very drastic - the BN has rigged the system, bribed and socially conditioned the people to ensure that it wins again.
It is a pity that the people of Malaysia are losing this opportunity to entrench a two coalition system in our political landscape.
Human Being: After March 9, no new projects and no new bills or legislation. But let me tell you, there will be an announcement something like this:
"Adalah niat saya untuk membubarkan Parlimen bulan lalu tetapi kerana inciden di Lahad Datu, keselamatan negara lebih penting daripada pilihanraya. Saya umumkan tempoh Parlimen dilanjutkan sementara waktu."
Kick: According to my sources from BN and Pakatan, BN could still win GE13. Najib is looking for the right time as he doesn't have the confidence in getting a clear majority or a better result than in the last elections.
If he could not achieve his task, Dr M and Mr M will force him to quit his post.
