YOURSAY 'The most dangerous place on earth for humans presumed to be felons must surely be the Malaysian police lock-ups.'

My men are just like detainees, says deputy IGP

your say Odin: Deputy inspector-general of police Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin, I'm certain that your ordinary fellow Malaysians would be happy to co-operate with and respect you lot if only you yourselves have shown that you were for them and that you earned their trust and respect. But no.

Who was it that bashed up a prominent detainee who was in handcuffs? Who resisted the establishing of the IPCMC (Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission) and has been the cause of ever-rising number of deaths in your lock-ups?

How did the police treat those who participated in or present at the Bersih 2.0 and 3.0 rallies? What did your department initially do to the four suspects in the N Dhamendran murder case?

There are many, many other questions I'd like to ask, but the answers to these are enough to show that it is you yourselves who have caused your ordinary fellow Malaysians to despise and curse you.

The most dangerous place on earth for humans presumed to be felons must surely be the Malaysian police lock-ups.

Ferdtan: Bakri, don't make us laugh. You say your men live like detainees. Is it? Were they tortured and sometimes killed?

You speak of reviewing SOP (standard operating procedure). Many chiefs before you had said the same thing each time a detainee died in lock-up.

With more than a dozen deaths in police lock-up, I guess there must more than a dozen varied SOPs that came out. To get the SOP perfected how many more deaths do you need? Will another dozen do?

You say, "They earn the same salary but their challenges get tougher every day." Whose fault is that? It is yours and the BN government who do not take care of them. I thought it is the duty of the IGP and you as deputy to provide better working conditions for your subordinates.

Respect must be earned and not demanded. If they do a good job in preventing crimes we are sure we shall in return support them all the way.

However, it is you, the top police officers, who are at fault for not prioritising their duty - instead of making them fight crimes you allocate the limited resources to monitor and harassing opposition leaders.

Anonymous #44199885: By no stretch of the imagination can police officers in charge of the lock-up be considered to be in the same position as a detainee.

A detainee has no communication with family and lawyers unless permitted by the police, has no freedom of movement and (for the innocent) live each day under the high stress of personal anxiety and embarrassment.

Anonymous #40538199: Stop doing the bidding for politicians. Enforce the law accordingly. And be professional and be responsible for your individual conduct. The rakyat will support the PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) all the way.

Malaysiawatch4.blogspot: If procedures like lock-up SOPs have still not been fine-tuned years after the IPCMC was recommended, then it is not the cops' fault but that of the top brass'.

Cala: DIGP Bakri must first explain why only Indians died in the lockup while investigations are going on.

Second, if he cannot account or to explain the surge in custodial deaths of Indian Malaysians, the wiser move is to include in the investigating teams other actors-agents (example, lawyers of the suspects, social workers, etc).

Third, the police are expected to conduct their business professionally. Under no circumstance the police may take advantage of the situation by bullying the suspects.

Wira: First, get the CCTV cameras and the recordings working reliably like the black box on every commercial plane. Then we talk and you will have our sympathy.

Survivor: Mohd Bakri, it's very simple to change the perception of the general public. Issue an order that your men should not torture detainees, whether they are hoodlums or otherwise.

There is such a thing as professional investigation and interrogation. Malaysia has enough laws on various crimes. Charge these alleged criminals, if you have enough evidence.

If not and if you intend to keep custody of them, make sure that you give them food and lodging. Do not release them as dead men.

Divert your attention to resolving crime and not let your force be made use of by your political master, Umno Baru, for their political exploits. Do this for the next five years and we will review your behaviour.

Hopeful123: Bakri, I hope you are reading all the comments posted here in Malaysiakini . You make yourself look like a fool. Why are defending your men?

If they are wrong then they are wrong, no two ways about it. No police officers can take it on any offender or suspect.

The doctors and nurses are also facing the same problem - occupational hazards, they call it. If the police officer cannot take the pressure then resign.

Oscar Kilo: Do your job properly. Uphold justice. Maintain law and order. Interrogate suspects and detainees according to the law. But please don't kill them.
