Why didn't ROS apply the same rules on Umno?

YOURSAY ‘Remember the farce of Umno's 1987/88 elections when Justice Harun Hashim declared the party an illegal organisation?'

DAP agrees to re-election of CEC

your say Proarte: When it comes to elections, the DAP has to be seen to be whiter than white.

Given there was a 'technical glitch' where candidates were wrongly announced and the fact that Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari, a Malay, was elected after the 'correction', this would naturally raise suspicions of foul play by DAP's detractors or those who are political rivals within the DAP.

It is crucial for the DAP to be seen to be redressing a compromised electoral process and the only way is to have a re-election. DAP cannot hope to bring BN to task for electoral fraud when its own elections are compromised.

The decision to hold new elections is long time coming but is the right decision.

Keturunan Malaysia: DAP in agreeing to re-election says plenty for having the guts and will to stand up to the unreasonableness on the part of the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and the powers-that-be, and the brains to realise that the rules as applied by the same said powers-that-be is not worth for DAP to go against as a matter of principle.

ACR: Remember the farce of Umno's 1987/88 elections which led to the formation of Umno Baru when Justice Harun Hashim declared the original Umno an illegal organisation?

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is talking about democracy in another news item today, had subsequently amended the law to bar political party members from bringing any dispute to court.

Hence, even if elections are rigged, too bad, just live with it. No other entity can come close to the level of filth Umno has seen.

Anonymous_4031: To solve the impasse concerning the DAP party elections, the best solution is to hold fresh party elections. It is regrettable but unavoidable.

The ROS, in the earlier occasion when Umno was declared illegal because of 11 illegal divisions sending delegates to the Umno assembly for party elections, failed to call for fresh elections. Justice Harun declared Umno an illegal organisation and yet ROS allowed the illegal party to hold the PM's post.

Why the double standards? The ROS should answer this. With a 43-vote victory, Mahathir was declared winner of the Umno election. A new party, Umno Baru, was then registered faster than boiling instant noodles.

It was the fastest registration in the world; and it should have gone into the Guinness Book of World Records for the super-duper efficiency of the ROS.

If the ROS could not, or would not, give valid reasons for rejecting DAP elections, then people should question its fairness. Why didn't ROS call Umno to hold fresh elections?

Shanandoah: This is the most sensible thing to do. Hold a re-election to satisfy the ROS. Pray that the same demand will be asked of all other BN component parties, including Umno Baru. In any case, DAP will emerge from this even stronger.

The Mask: After the Umno election, maybe someone could write to the ROS to complain about fictitious discrepancies, also using a fictitious name, like what Father Augustine Chen did. Then let's see whether the ROS would apply the same law and instructions.

Spinnot: ROS should make sure Father Augustus Chen is duly notified of the new CEC election by burning a joss paper notice of the meeting.

Anticonmen: "To compound the position, the party's repeated requests to the registrar to be supplied with the complaints made against the party have been futile.''

No evidence of the complaints means it clearly shows all are fake complaints manufactured by Umno agents. Fake author of a fake report with fake complaints and a fake investigation by a fake investigator.

Mr KJ John: Sorry DAP, you all do not live by principles. You should have challenged the ROS in court. When the mistake happened, I wrote and advised that the worst that can happen was only another extraordinary general meeting (EGM) for DAP.

But, you all used the "potential de-registration" as a GE issue and even got PAS to stand by ; and got maximum mileage out of the whole incident and only now, you choose to kowtow, still using the same excuse.

Sorry guys; when you live in glass houses, do not throw stones at others. The ROS should have given its reasons and you should have taken it to court. Shame on you. Sorry but that is how I feel.

Pariah Man: Stubbornness and big headedness doesn't take anyone anywhere. DAP chairperson Karpal Singh admitted there was a flaw in the CEC elections, just have it again and go on with life.

Anonymous$&@?: DAP should hold the CEC re-election but still sue the ROS. Make them spell out the reasons for their decision to compel a re-election.

Aries46:

DAP must take the ROS to court before making a decision one way or another. The ROS, like all civil servants, is obliged to provide valid reasons for whatever decision he arrives at.

His stubborn stance of refusing to provide justification and meet or discuss his decision with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng raises questions about his authority and competency as well as his conduct.

If he happens to be a member of any other political party, then the question of impartiality and conflict of interest arises. DAP should not take this shameful event lying down as it may be construed that they are guilty of the unsubstantiated allegations levelled at them.

Nevertheless, in the unlikely event of the ROS is found justified in his stand on ordering DAP to hold fresh elections because of the ‘computer glitch', then he would be the ideal person to head our much maligned and tainted Election Commission, provided he is not another card-carrying member doing what he is told.

Multi Racial: It is sad we have unprofessional and bias authorities like the ROS. Why can't they be more transparent with their decision and responsive with inquiries? If they have done a proper job, why are they afraid to disclose how they arrived at their decision?

Under such circumstances, I believe DAP CEC made the right decision to hold the re-election.

Wira: Want to take a bet that DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang and Guan Eng will again top the list and that a Malay will make it to the top 20 in the Central Executive Committee election again?
