Nothing embarrassing in MH370 report, says PM

MH370 Malaysia has nothing embarrassing to hide in its preliminary report on the MH370 incident to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“I don’t think so, but I just want this (investigation) team to go through it.

"But in the name of transparency, we will release the report next week,” he told CNN in an interview published this morning.

Earlier in the interview, Najib said he has already directed the international investigation team to study the report for a possible public release next week.

He made the above statement when asked whether there is something embarrassing in the report that is preventing the report from being released early.

The preliminary report needs to be sent to ICAO within 30 days of an aircraft accident, according to an international treaty known as Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation. Nearly all United Nations members including Malaysia are a signatory to this treaty.

Besides ICAO, the preliminary report also needs to be sent to the country where the aircraft was designed and built, and countries that have provided experts or facilities to aid the investigation, among others.

The treaty does not require the report to be made public, although this is usually done early in past air accident investigations.

Previously, Department of Civil Aviation director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said that the report has been submitted within the 30-day requirement, but authorities have yet to decide whether to release the report.
