Mkini journalist a victim of selective persecution

YOURSAY ‘In Bolehland, only those who speak or write the truth get arrested.’

Mkini journo arrested for sedition, quizzed for 9hrs

CQ Muar: Malaysiakini journalist Susan Loone, cheer up. The world is watching, and we are with you in spirit and prayer.

Hauling you up for questioning and investigation by the police is obviously politically motivated, and done under the instructions of certain top leaders in this country.

As I have written earlier, the price to pay will be high if irresponsible extremists continue to administer and dominate this country.

The truth exposed by the righteous is always a bitter pill to swallow for these cowards. The unseen Divine will ensure justice will prevail.

Appum: Susan, of course, by now you know that in Bolehland, only those who speak or write the truth get arrested. So what else is new?

Vijay47: The entire alleged offence seems to hinge on the term " like a criminal " which apparently should mean the accused must be deprived of all his civil rights and be subject to some beating up for good measure.

The fact that Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh still had his phone is quoted as evidence that he was not treated like a criminal. But what would you call it when someone is kept in police custody overnight in a police station and has his fingerprints taken?

One would believe that such attention usually befalls only a person who commits an "actual" crime like robbery, assault, or murder. Would you expect such treatment if you went to the station to report that you had knocked into the back of someone's car?

Susan, I must admire your courage for staying the course and continuing to report for Malaysiakini . These days, any association with Malaysiakini ,however remote ,is fraught with danger and the repercussions can be most unpleasant. So hang in there, girl, and watch the skies.

Tholu: Where is our government leading us to? Are we already on the path of certain destruction and collapse as a nation?

Umno, the dominant party in the BN coalition government, seems to be trembling at seeing its own shadow. It has finally realised that at the rate the populace is shifting its allegiance to the opposition coalition, it will certainly be dethroned in the next general election after a long uninterrupted and comfortable reign of the country.

Once the opposition comes into power, there will be no more millionaires in BN and many will have to work hard to make a decent living and support their family with their own sweat.

Thus, it is not surprising that even if a mosquito or a fly were to appear intimidating to them in their frenzied fear of losing power, they will not be spared from legal persecution.

It’s saddening and maddening to have a government that is unscrupulously and unethically fighting to remain in power by intimidating, harassing and bullying its people.

Negarawan: This is selective persecution at the lowest ethical and moral standards. If the same "rules" were applied, the home minister should be in jail today.

Let us rally around Susan Loone and give her our moral support and prayers that Almighty God will protect her all the way. We also pray that Almighty God will rebuke all those abusing their position and authority in government.

Victor Johan: So those detained by the police can't share their experience with journalists as it will be deemed as seditious?

Shouldn't the greater public not know about the ordeals and experiences of those detained, especially our elected representatives, as in this episode?

Other than the journalists, how about the lawyers who may be present with their clients, or perhaps denied from being present?

Anonymous_3e12: When Perkasa lodges a police report, the police act. When others similarly do the same, there is only inaction from the police. Where is the fairness?

Further, the whole issue is spinning out of control. Because the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) cannot ensure the safety and security of the citizens from robbers and snatch thieves, the Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) was set up, and now its members are arrested, including the journalist who reported about their experience in the PDRM’s lockup.

This surreal situation reminds of a story from China where political dissidents were arrested and put in mental institutions, leaving no room for actually crazy people, who were then left to roam the streets causing harm, including committing knife attacks on ordinary citizens.

Fair&Just: Be brave, Susan, draw strength from all your supporters. Be comforted to know that there is an equal and opposite action for everything in this Universe.

Axolotl: Can there be any doubt whatsoever that Malaysia has degenerated into a rogue nation, fast approaching the tragic status of failed state, under the uninspiring ‘misleadership’ of PM Najib Razak?

With kangaroo courts, keystone cops and ‘kangkung’ ministers like Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on the loose, very little hope remains for those who cherish honesty, decency, accountability, justice, and truth.

Only the unfit get promoted to the very top while the courageous and outspoken get harassed, intimidated and arrested under archaic laws.

Louis: Susan Loone, you did no wrong. They must be crazy to even want to intimidate a journalist reporting just the plain truth.

Nil: Know that the way they treated you, if reported, can also be seen as seditious.

FellowMalaysian: If what Susan Loone wrote is deemed seditious, then the entire group of editors in Utusan Malaysia should be placed in jail as most of the news they reported on opposition matters are skewed, hypocritical and scurrilous. Yet none of them has been hauled up by the police.

It is this double standard of interpreting the laws that has so hotly riled up the people who are obviously concerned with the multiple arrests of dissidents.

The arrests and charges seemed to have been carried out just the past two weeks. It certainly sounded strange - as if the devils, out to appease themselves during the seventh month on terrestrial earth, had suddenly morphed themselves into the bodies of our law enforcers.
