The double bash of Malaysiakini’s 15th anniversary and the launch of its new headquarters, @Kini, is set to draw a crowd of more than 1,000 on Saturday.

The street party hosted by the country’s first news portal is to kick off at 7pm and it will see a number of exciting performances.

The tone of the night is set to be casual and easy-going so that Malaysiakini team members can meet with the people who have helped make the organisation what it is today.

Malaysiakini will also throw its doors open from 4pm to 7pm where members of the public can tour the new office building located off Jalan Tandang, Petaling Jaya (see map below).

Visitors will be able to view the seven-foot ‘The Wall’, which comprises 1,040 bricks embossed with all the names of the contributors to the ‘ Buy a Brick ’ campaign.

At 7pm, the celebrations will begin with the launch of @Kini, followed by a street party outside the new building, along with an array of food and entertainment.

Breaking with tradition, the launch of @Kini will be done by Malaysiakini staff.

“The street party is going to be one of a kind. I’m sure people will be surprised with what we have in store for them. It will be a memorable night for all,” said street party organiser Subramaniam Selvarajoo.

Acoustic band

Among the performers is Magnifico, a five-piece acoustic band that will belt out a wide range of songs catering to the multi-racial crowd.

Magnifico, which was formed over two years ago, has caused quite a stir in the music scene with their talent for Latin music as well as local favourites in English, Malay, Chinese and even Tamil.

The band line-up consists of Mira Mohd Hatta on rhythm guitar, Oyent Hazryl on percussions, Che Ai on upright double bass, Jay Cugat on lead guitar and Agus Rafiz on drums.

The set list for Magnifico on the night is a variety of songs, ranging from classics such as ‘Hotel California’ to recent pop hits, catering to a crowd of all ages.
