Indonesian search teams fail to lift AirAsia fuselage

QZ8501 Indonesian search crews briefly raised the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia plane using inflated lifting bags before it sank again because of strong currents, an official said today.

“It briefly moved, but because of the strong currents the straps were detached from the fuselage,” said search operation chief Suryadi Supriyadi.

The operation to lift the fuselage would resume tomorrow, he said.

Supriyadi said four bodies were found, bringing the confirmed death toll to 69.

Flight QZ8501 was midway from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore when it crashed into the Java Sea with 162 people on board on Dec 28.

Investigators are analysing the aircraft’s flight recorders and are expected to announce their findings on Jan 28.
