Blacking out scandals is SOP for big media

YOURSAY ‘The right to know must be matched with the duty to inform.’

Big media black out PM's brothers

JD Lovrenciear: The mainstream media must grow up. It demands all those editors to account to their readers and not allow themselves to sacrifice the founding principles of ethics-centred journalism.

For how long more would you be a party to a crime, i.e. not living up to the credo of ‘The right to know must be matched in equal measure with the duty to inform’?

Kim Quek: Blacking out mega scandals of the ruling elite by the mainstream media - which includes practically all newspapers and TV channels - is the standard operation procedure (SOP) that has helped the ruling coalition to retain power over the decades, election after election.

The recent case being Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the purpose of helping out an alleged underworld kingpin under trial in the United States.

Now it’s the case of PM Najib Abdul Razak being slammed by his siblings for dragging their father Abdul Razak Hussein’s good name through the mud in order to escape accountability for Najib and wife Rosmah Mansor’s alleged lavish spending that runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.

This is just another reminder to Malaysians that democracy is as good as dead in this country, where free media is an illusion, and the corrupt authoritarian power can practically rule in perpetuity in the guise of democracy - short of a major upheaval, that is.

Time for Change: As a Malaysian, blacking out this important revelation by Najib's brothers about their father confirms the perception that the mainstream media always need to ask permission first before they can publish adverse but factual news.

This is Malaysia Boleh, governed by people who are above the law.

Casey919: Spending money is not a sin. Getting money illegally is a sin. Declaring that you do not know the Mongolian mother is not a sin. ‘C4ing’ a Mongolian mother to pieces is a sin.

Unless I am found guilty legally, I have no sins. This land is mine. The court is mine. It can only be yours if I say so.

See you at the 14th general election (GE14).

Ben-ghazi: Who reads Utusan Malaysia nowadays? Because of that, the company is losing money big time.

Only those from the rural areas of Peninsular Malaysia might read it. Since these people are not aware of the claim that Najib allegedly became rich due to inheritance, it doesn't make any difference whether the paper printed the foursome's article.

BN-CyberTrooper-007: This shows that the boss has his hands in the mainstream newspapers.

RCZ: I still ask the question - what are the wonderful and powerful Razak brothers doing about this?

Are they sitting back and allowing the nonsense to continue without inquiring where the monies for condos, bags, etc, are coming from?

If they are not bothered to ask this, no one should be bothered about them, their or their father’s reputation.

Abasir: The indignation expressed by the feuding four is somewhat curious.

These were the same conniving brothers who remained as quiet as a church mouse when it was revealed that one of them and his pregnant wife had allegedly turned up at The Curve to threaten private investigator P Balasubramaniam (PI Bala).

Wasn't such a a report, repeated ad nauseum, a cause for concern? Didn't that cast aspersions on the character of the family and its patriarch?

Or isn't being linked to a murder not enough to sully the family name? Najib, I believe, is no different from the rest of them.

RR: We cannot believe that PMs and ministers these days do not enrich themselves and really dedicate themselves for the service of the people.

Even in India where Mahatma Gandhi set the standards of service to people, is no longer the case except perhaps for PM Narendra Modi now.

In Malaysia, the first three PMs had that discipline. Here we should admire the people-oriented PMs and ministers of the Scandinavian countries. They live simple frugal lives.

Where is Justice: One would wonder why. Did I really miss the last episode of ‘Dallas’?
