Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah ( at right in pix below ) and the movement's secretariat member Mandeep Singh were arrested today over the Kita Lawan rally on March 28.

The duo were arrested by the police  at 11am after they were summoned to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur to have their statements recorded.

They were released after police took down their statements regarding the rally at downtown KL.

Earlier, Chin's lawyer Honey Tan tweeted that Chin had been detained under Section 143 of the Penal Code related to unlawful assembly.

Mandeep ( left in pix ) had accompanied Chin to the police station and was arrested first before having his statement recorded.

The Kita Lawan secretariat issued a statement citing the police action as an attempt to intimidate and scare the people.

“It is an attempt to intimidate the people who would participate in the coming  Kita Lawan protest this Friday .

Kita Lawan sees this action as resulting in the people continuing on with the peaceful protest this weekend,” the secretariat said.

“The people have the right to assemble peacefully against the Goods and Services tax.”

To date, police have arrested more than 10 people linked to the organising of the Kita Lawan protest rallies.
