CEO: Talk of MAS’ fleet sale or lease is premature

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) yesterday said recent speculation on the airline offering some of its fleet for sale or lease is premature when nothing concrete has been achieved.

In fact, exploring fleet options to enhance viability of long haul sectors is one area being looked into by the airline, said chief executive officer Christoph R Mueller.

“MAS needs to operate and utilise its fleet at an optimum level, besides maximising revenue on the routes it flies.

“The market needs to give Malaysia Airlines room to explore various options in determining the most viable strategy,” he said in a statement.

Aviation websites recently reported that Malaysia Airlines is offering several of its aircraft, including its six A380 super-jumbos, for sale or lease.

Mueller ( right ) assumed leadership of the Malaysia Airlines Group on May 1 following a decision by its sole shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, to accelerate the leadership transition to enable Mueller to be in the executive capacity to lead the overall restructuring of the airline.

Most important on Mueller’s plate is to drive the design and implementation of the business plan for the new Malaysia Airlines, to turn the national carrier to sustainable profitability, the statement noted.
