Crucial for elected rep to be intelligent, too

YOURSAY ‘Look at the level of debate in Parliament. It makes one real sick.’

'Stupid' to require polls bidders to have BM credit

ACR: When I did my SPM some 21 years ago, I scored P7 in Bahasa Malaysia but re-sat the July BM paper the following year (I don't know whether this system is around these days) and got a C3 without studying a day more than what I had already studied for the SPM the previous year.

I was already in college by then and took a day off to sit for the BM exam. The marking system was a farce then as it is now. These days, it is even more ridiculous, with A+, A and A- being part of the grading system, with the whole idea of having thousands scoring a string of 'A's.

Some nefarious idea must be behind this proposal on language for MPs. In India, the world's largest democracy, Hindi and English are languages for use in Parliament. With permission, the mother tongue may be used (for every state in India has its own language).

In Malaysia, BM is already required for use in Parliament and the courts. English can only be used with permission. The Election Commission (EC) and the other morons who mooted this have nothing more pressing to look into?

Nes: Maybe we should have an IQ test, too. That will probably wipe out the entire government as well as many opposition representatives.

Ah-Hah!!!: It might be interesting to check the academic records of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

If I am not mistaken, he may not have an MCE (the then equivalent of today’s SPM) credit for Bahasa Malaysia (BM).

Heck, I don't think he has sat for MCE/SPM at all - he more likely took the O-level examination in Britain.

Zappy-Zapzap: Yes, I wonder if the PM has a credit in BM since he studied mostly in the UK and probably did not do the MCE/SPM in Malaysia.

If he doesn’t have this qualification, can he continue to be PM? Ridhuan Tee Abdullah is caught in his own warped logic.

Dingy: If we want smart and intellectual MPs, why not make it compulsory to have a minimum basic degree? This, of course would rule out Najib. It’s a good way to boot him out.

He didn't complete his basic degree, for he was recalled back from his UK university to replace his father in Pekan.

Just Me: Indeed, if you ask the rakyat, I feel they will say all politicians should have a degree at least. Look at the level of debate in Parliament. It makes one real sick.

Bystander: They now claim that since Bahasa Malaysia is the official language of the country, the minimum requirements of a SPM credit in Bahasa Malaysia is mandatory.

In no time, you will also need to be a Muslim to qualify, since Islam is the official religion of Malaysia.

Grey Matter: Maybe we should also make sure that they have an IQ above 150 and a credit in English and Maths too.

Jonah2: How about being Malaysian for a minimum of four generations as the criteria?

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will fail this test. Maybe even Kinabatangan’s Bung Moktar Radin.

Hero325: Opposition lawmakers would argue that it is absurd, but it is not. MPs must have proper language competency to contest in the election.

Otherwise they cannot perform their job properly. Those who object are actually the ones without a credit in BM.

The Analyser: The only single criteria that should be imposed on a candidate for election is that he or she is a Malaysian citizen. Any selection beyond that level is up to the voters to decide.

But when you are a member of an autocratic, insecure society, there is always someone out there who will want to impose further electoral restrictions.

Malaysia Ku: Actually we should have an IQ and EQ (emotional quotient) assessment of each candidate vying to be in Parliament. Perhaps the IQ test should be based on at least the Standard 6 level.

Then we won't have MPs and ministers like those we have today, the majority of whom are nincompoops and imbeciles possessing just based mammalian instincts.

Appum: If the EC can even think of responding to a pseudo professor, that goes to show what kind of EC we have now.

In addition to an SPM BM credit, why not add credits in Maths and Science as well... but from Cambridge or Oxford ‘O’ level only, not SPM.

Then, we need not be engaging with issues like 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) or Goods and Services Tax (GST) confusion with the ministers.

How nice if we have quality ministers for once. This is sarcasm for you, Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

Intheair: Are we so sure that the current batch of ministers has credit in SPM BM, especially those who spent most of their formative years in the West?
