Travel subsidy reveals 1Malaysia but 2Systems

YOURSAY ‘We cannot trust EC and BN. Best is not to give any money at all.’

Giving voters travel subsidy not an offence

Out of Time: If subsidy for transport is allowed by the Election Commission (EC), then the EC should be the one doing the giving and it should be to every voter and a set amount.

For example, every voter that comes gets a set amount from the EC after voting (with proof of indelible ink on fingernail).

Bringon14: But the problem is not really whether or not the money is a travel subsidy. The problem is that the folks in the EC and the BN cannot be trusted to just hand out the money solely for travel.

They will do all sorts of things to achieve their goal. Therefore the best thing to do is not to give any money at all.

Chipmunk: Any money given out by Umno or BN is considered clean, or so says the EC chairperson. As long as it is beneficial to Umno, it is okay.

It’s the same as when the layman says that Umno is bribing someone, Umno says it is not bribery but "money politics".

The same with the recent arrest of the opposition MPs who were charged under the Sedition Act for the anti-GST campaign, while the inspector-general of police’s brother wasn't charged. Instead the group was investigated under the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

1Malaysia but 2Systems (one for opposition and one for Umno). Apa lagi Umno mahu?

Opah: This is how cheating is done: Voter A goes to the voting booth but does not vote. He gives his blank voting slip to Partyman and gets his allowance.

Voter B goes to Partyman and gets the voting slip which has now been appropriately marked by Partyman. Voter B goes to the voting booth, puts the pre-marked voting slip into the box and brings his own unmarked slip to Partyman, which is when he gets his allowance.

The allowance is only given for unmarked voting slips and there is no way that a voter who takes the money can vote for another party.

Chipmunk, there's not enough evidence because those who should be looking for the evidence are looking the other way.

FairMind: I am sure if the police round up these guys and question them like they did to the 160 activists, the vote cheating by using the travelling allowance will surely be exposed.

But our police are in the loop and they are more interested in tweeting and rounding up the opposition for sedition.

Giving of allowances/subsidies favour the candidate with deep pockets. Those candidates who do not have the means to give allowances/subsidies will definitely be placed at a disadvantage.

In any election, the EC chief must ensure all candidates are contesting on a level-playing field.

In addition to this advantage, the election is open to abuse by using the modus operandi mentioned by Opah. This method of vote buying is already well-known and the EC chief pretends to be oblivious to it.

No EC chief in the world would stupid enough to condone or stick out his neck to declare that giving out of an advantage in a general election does not constitute an offence. Only in Malaysia, an EC chief would give such a biased comment without batting an eyelid or feeling shame.

If it were some other country, the chairperson would be sacked or thrown into jail for condoning such an action which is open to abuse.

Sarajun Hoda: Giving out travelling expenses so people will come to vote for BN is crystal clear vote-buying.

Add that to the handouts they gave in elections, including promises of government projects, the BN candidate should be disqualified.

The EC asking the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe is like asking itself in the mirror.

CQ Muar: Whatever thing the government, police, MACC and EC say or do is never considered an offence. Any whims and fancies that they decide on constitute the law - no question asked.

They all act and collude with one another. Therefore, anything that others protest will be abruptly overruled. Such is their way and what they term as "fairness".

The government will stop at nothing to prevent dissenters from robbing them of their grip on power, lest all prospects of wealth will come to an abrupt end. This precisely is the fear they conceive should they lose in the next general election.

Appum: I propose that for future elections, the BN government subsidises all voters who turn out to vote. RM100 for every 10km they have to travel. How about that? That way, nobody complains.

Hot Khong: It’s okay as long as the voters get the cash first, then go vote whoever the like.

Unlike the alleged dirty trick that BN used in the last GE, where they only got a voucher and could only cash it if the BN candidate won.
