YOURSAY ‘Would Mara reinstitute his scholarship if he took up bowling?’

Up in arms over second chance for porn offender

Vijay47: This is what the whole world must be impressed with - Mara's caring nature for someone who has unfortunately, no doubt through the fault of others, fallen by the roadside. It is not as though he committed a serious offence like robbing the nation of a few billion ringgit, it was just the wrong choice of a hobby.

Others like to collect stamps and he prefers photos of children and even then, he had only 30,000 in his collection, possibly a world record, which would be another reason to make Malaysia proud.

I am sure Mara would consider reinstituting his scholarship if he also took up bowling and made a bright future for himself.

Ramesh Rajaratnam: I like Vijay47's reasoning. Perhaps our home minister should also write a letter of support for the poor fellow. After all, we are able to muster such senior level support for others who have been charged overseas, so why stop now.

Vgeorgemy: Anyone expects justice from this regime that detains children and metes out the justice system for adults, is living in a fool’s paradise.

Abasir: As of now there has been no reaction from Umno's serial tweeters. Neither has there been even a whimper from the education minister nor the usual guardians of public morality.

But Mara (not surprisingly) still sees immense potential in him. For one thing, he can effortlessly count up to 30,000. He has also mastered file management and record keeping and is more than likely to be an expert in digital image editing and manipulation.

And given his laser-like focus on innocent, young children, one may conclude he is also a people-person.

Put it all together and we may say that he is the kind of special talent which Umno clearly needs for a future leadership role.

Ace: Sadly, in this land of double standards and warped justice, protesting against the Goods and Services Act (GST) is a very serious offence and even juveniles have to be handcuffed and chained, student leaders speaking up against injustice have to be suspended or sacked, elected parliamentarians are arrested for doing their jobs of pointing out malpractices and paraded in prison outfits but a convicted rapist and a convicted dabbler in child pornography are treated as minor delinquents and must be "given a second chance".

The people in positions of power are really mentally sick!

Pputeh: First it was a rapist bowler now this, child pornography! And to take the cake they want to appeal. This is why we stand above the rest of the world, and for all the wrong reasons. Truly Malaysia Boleh.

Fairplayer: This government of the day is setting the trend of breeding spoilt brats who feed on child porn, or any porn, for that matter. If my child were to be convicted that way, I would let him stay in jail for as long as necessary. No special treatment!

Doc: In Malaysia, paedophilia, rapists, molesters, sex fiends, Internet sex stalkers, guardians of the law demanding for sex, can all can be forgiven. Only sodomy cannot be forgiven.

Saphire: The leaders' stupidity knows no bounds. Here is a man convicted of possession of 30,000 videos and photos of child pornography, and Shafie Apdal sees it fit to appeal. Appealing in the UK is no small matter.

The amount of money used to get lawyers could be better used to buy lots of clothing for those poor victims of the floods. But, if Shafie is willing to use the money from his own pocket, by all means do so.

P Dev Anand Pillai: It is a clear indication from our side that porn is okay, but not human and political rights!

Dr M: Kiddie porn whizkid has forgotten Quran

Asian Malaysian: With due respect to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, if "following the Quran" is the only thing keeping Malaysians from paedophilia, we are in deeper trouble than he thinks. We had true constitutional laws and separation between state and religion in Malaysia's Glory Days.

That all ended because Mahathir started picking and choosing articles in the federal constitution, not to mention changing bits he did not like. So spare us the sermon now.

Abasir: Going by Mahathir's logic, the millions of non-Muslims who don't follow the Quran must also be paedophiles.

Appum: Dr Mahathir, this kind of followers are not found only amongst Muslims, they are found in all religions. That is why religion should be left out totally in the administrative and political arena.

We should stick to our constitutional secularity. We should ban religious parties.

There are as many ‘convenient’ Muslims as there are ‘convenient’ Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. Religion should be treated as a personal encounter rather than a state matter. We will then all have less arguments and labelling.

Wira: Why link download of kiddie porn to a religion or any religion at all? Why always choose religion as an excuse or answer for poor upbringing of kids by their parents?

If parents don't do their duty, then society should take punitive remedy against the criminal for the failure of his/her parents.

RR: Yes, the western world dropped religion out its government, politics and administration for centuries now because of various factions within religion that caused havoc in the administration in these countries.

But the west is paying a heavy price today with decadence of values in society. Hence there should be universal human values like truth, righteousness, equality, meritocracy, respect for parents and elders, love for humanity, etc should be part of primary school curriculum all over the world without any attachment to any religion. Only this can save the world in future.

Meow: The root cause of the problem is the ‘kafir’? As usual, blame others for their stupidity.
