DPM bares chest, something rotten in 1MDB

YOURSAY ‘The leaked Muhyiddin video is the turning point in Umno crisis.’

DPM wants 1MDB board axed, probed by cops

Abasir: "This is my personal view," said DPM Muhyiddin Yassin in confirming that he had called for the sacking of the 1MDB board and that they be investigated by the police.

So it’s a "personal view" expressed exclusively for Umno members. But Muhyiddin, don't you have an official view as deputy president and deputy prime minister?

Is that view, if indeed you have one, in line with your personal view? Or do you have two views - one for Umno members and one for the rakyat?

RCZ: The 1MDB problem falls squarely on the PM-cum-finance minister, the Finance Ministry, the governor of Bank Negara and the 1MDB Board, along with some outsiders, who manipulated our country’s funds and the banking industry with ease.

No one else, and to say otherwise cannot hold, whichever way you look at it. What happened in 1MDB is a crime and the criminals ought to be arrested. Simple as that.

Therefore, there is no point for the DPM to make closed-door speeches and not do anything to ensure the alleged culprits are arrested and charged.

Please have a word with our Twitter king. Maybe you can send him a tweet about this.

Lee Hup: I agree that 1MDB has its problems, but I don't see them as being personally caused by the PM.

I hope the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) can speed up its work once they get the auditor-general’s report.

I would like to believe that 1MDB was actually set up with the good intention of improving the country's economy, but unfortunately, poorly executed.

Speaking Sense: There is a new twist on 1MDB every day. Meanwhile, the country is sliding away.

Muhyiddin steals the thunder from Najib

Kim Quek: This is virtually Muhyiddin’s open declaration of war against his boss, PM Najib Razak, and former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad is obviously the maestro orchestrating the show, timed to hit Najib the hardest - at Najib’s supposed moment of glory when he presented his second master plan for the country.

The Najib-Mahathir tussle has thus entered a new phase, and the top echelon of Umno’s hierarchy may not have the luxury of continuing their current fence-sitting for long, and it will soon be “either you are for me or against me”.

It’s rather unfortunate for Najib, bad news keeps on popping up from the can of worms known as 1MDB, like the big lie about parking its non-existing cash in a bank in Singapore.

However, don’t expect a quick closure to this chapter of Umno’s power struggle, as Najib, buttressed by his wife Rosmah Mansor, has dug in for a good fight.

Negarawan: "An Umno supreme council member has criticised Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for being ‘lazy’ to check on the condition of schools nationwide which led to some schools in a deplorable state."

Already the counter-attack from Najib has started.

Ipoh PP: I think all on the 1MDB board should go on leave till the investigation by the auditor-general and other bodies, such as PAC, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police, complete their job.

This includes the 1MDB adviser too.

Cmfoo: Of course, the PM won't listen to you, Muhyiddin. The elephant in the room that everyone seems to be ignoring is that the 1MDB mess, Finance Ministry’s negligence and misuse of those rakyat funds (for example Tabung Haji, KWAP, etc) all point to Najib and his cronies.

Hero325: A lot of political novices fail to see that the leaked Muhyiddin video is the turning point, the last straw on the camel’s back.

The Umno crisis has already started - it is now either Najib or Muhyddin, not the two together anymore. Najib must take the offensive to stop the rebellion from Muhyiddin.

Otherwise Malaysia will have the seventh PM soon.

Will Muhyiddin urge Najib's sacking, too?

Hang Babeuf: Dear PM Najib, Please understand one thing. When you are the big question on people’s minds, and not the nation and its future and the challenges that the country currently faces, then you cannot govern.

And it is sheer wilfulness to hang on, to insist on clinging to the reins of power (and enjoying the “perks” and benefits of the top position), in that situation.

It is time to do what any person who gives priority to the nation’s best interests understands and instinctively knows to do: it is time for you to resign.

With thanks for your efforts over the years, however unavailing they may often have been, and with gratitude for your anticipated readiness now to stand aside with good grace and without undue fuss or bitter resentment or maudlin self-pity.

That is what is now expected and required of you. If you can manage that, then in the eye of history nothing will prove greater in your prime ministership than the manner of your leaving it.

Nb: Now that the DPM has also voiced his doubt, the PM will have no choice but to allow the police to investigate the matter.

The cabinet must decide if the entire board should be suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation.
