Spad moots new railway line for Kelantan

The Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) has suggested to the government to study the possibility of constructing a new railway line in Kelantan that is free from the threat of the floods.

Spad chairperson Syed Hamid Albar said this was because the present tracks from Gua Musang up to Tumpat were badly damaged due to the floods that occurred in December last year.

"The proposal is for the long term to ensure that railway services, particularly in Kelantan, were not affected if a major flood occurs again," he told reporters after presenting Phase 3 of the Spad Flood Aid in Kuala Krai today.

Syed Hamid said the commission could give its opinion and it was up to the Transport Ministry, which might already have plans to improve the railway services.

He said he had been informed that the government had provided allocation to repair the damaged railway tracks in Kelantan but it would take a long time to complete the repair works.
