'M'sian patriots morphing into Beijing slaves'

The government, who frequently boasts about deafening Malaysia's sovereignty against outside interference has been ticked off for now pandering to the dictates of Beijing.

PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad responding to the deportation of Chinese activists questioned why Putrajaya cared so much for what Beijing thinks.

"Why are we, a sovereign nation, allowing foreign countries to dictate our border policies?" he said at a press statement today.

He was responding to Putrajaya's deportation of Hong Kong activists Joshua Wong and Leung Kwok-Hung who were scheduled to speak at a pro-democracy forum in Petaling Jaya last night.

Wong and Leung are vocal critics of the Chinese government and have accused Beijing of trying to stifle democracy in Hong Kong.

Inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar had justified the deportations on grounds of  national security and protecting Putrajaya's relations with Beijing.

However, Nik Nazmi scorned the explanation as "laughable".

"Wong and Leung, as far as I am aware, have not been convicted of any offences.

"It is not clear therefore why they would pose a threat to Malaysia’s security or be considered as undesirables," he said.

'Putrajaya inconsistent'

He added Putrajaya was not consistent in its apparent desire not to offend China, citing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak having signed a strategic partnership with China's main rival Japan this week.

"Or was Wong and Leung’s rough treatment simply because Putrajaya, like Beijing, is afraid of the opponents of injustice, anytime and anywhere?

"The government of Malaysia must apologise to the two men and let them enter (the country)," he said.

Leung, who is a Hong Kong lawmaker, was yesterday deported on arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Wong, who arrived at Penang International Airport on Tuesday, was also deported within an hour.
