Delhi ‘fake degree’ minister resigns

An Indian state-level minister belonging to an anti-corruption party resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of forging his law degree, officials said today.

Jitendra Singh Tomar, law minister for the territory of Delhi and member of the Aam Aadmi party (AAP), allegedly never obtained the degree he listed on his nomination for local elections in February.

He submitted his resignation late yesterday, said party spokesperson Ashutosh.

The anti-corruption AAP is in opposition at the national level, but won a landslide victory in the Delhi polls, beating out the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

Investigators had gone to the eastern state of Bihar to check Tomar’s law degree and found it to be fake, the Delhi police said.

Police charged Tomar with cheating and criminal conspiracy and the politician could face a jail term of seven years if convicted.

Tomar denies the charges and maintains he has a genuine degree.
