1MDB's advisory board which includes a former prime minister of Qatar were today told to quit in dignity for failure to perform their duties and avoid being made scapegoats.

"The board of advisers comprises eminent local and international figures who are suppose to help determine and guide the vision of 1MDB," said Dr Ko Chong Sen (DAP-Kampar) in a statement today.

"It is incredible that they have only met twice with all the controversies and allegations going around for many months now," he noted.

Ko was referring to a parliamentary written reply on Monday in which the finance ministry stated that the board had only met twice and that Najib received no payment for his role as the advisory board's chairperson.

Besides the prime minister, Sheikh Hamad Jassim Jabr Al-Thani, the former premier of Qatar was roped in as special advisor.

Star-studded team

Other members of the star-studded 1MDB advisory board include former cabinet minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Petronas chairperson Mohd Sidek Hassan, chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa , and finance ministry secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.

Others are chairperson of Perbadanan Insurance Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) Abdul Samad Alias, chairperson of Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak and Chang Zhenming, the chairperson and president of  the Citic Group of China.

"Were the advisors fully aware of the problems facing the company which were widely reported both locally and internationally ? Did they approve of all the dealings by 1MDB?" he asked.

"It is hard to imagine that the advisors - with the exception of Najib - were kept up to date with only two meetings convened," he said.

They should resign immediately in dignity rather than be made  scapegoats for Najib, he added.
