Azmin keeps Selangor gov't intact

There is no need to dissolve the Selangor government, if Menteri Besar Azmin Ali retains support from all three opposition parties.

PKR lawmaker N Surendran said the state constitution clearly states that a state government can function as long as the menteri besar commands the confidence of a majority of assemblypersons.

"Constitutionally, the state government is under no threat of collapse. Article 53(2)(a) of the Selangor Constitution makes it clear that the menteri besar and his government remain in place as long as he commands the support of the majority of the state assemblypersons.

"Indeed, in both our federal and state legislatures, governments have always been formed upon majority support of the elected reps, irrespective of whether their parties form a coalition or not. This is elementary," he said in a statement today.

Surendran ( photo ) was responding to a statement by legal expert Aziz Bari, who said the Selangor government is crippled now that Pakatan has been dissolved.

"There is not the slightest indication that the MB has lost the support of the PKR, DAP and PAS assemblypersons. On the contrary, there have been clear expressions of support from leaders of the said parties," he said.

PAS sided with Azmin during MB crisis

Surendran's comment comes as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today ordered PAS' Selangor assemblypersons to continue supporting Azmin.

"I would like to stress that PAS' cooperation with Pakatan components in Selangor is in the framework of upholding the (state) government which was built through the people's trust.

"As such PAS central has ordered Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Ab Samad [...] to order all Selangor PAS assemblypersons to continue supporting Azmin, to continue their service to the people and maintain the government in charge of Selangor at the moment," Hadi ( photo ) said in a statement.

PAS had sided with Azmin during the Selangor menteri besar crisis, during which PKR and DAP had wanted PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to replace former MB Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Hadi had insisted that Pakatan is not dead yet although DAP, its partner in the opposition pact, has announced that the coalition no longer exists.
